Chasing EVERYTHING

Thanks to you both, Romeosangiovese and Ginger's Mom, for the heads up on the Controlled Unleashed website and Yahoo Group. I'm joining as well and will keep reading !

Ordered book yesterday

Hi,

I ordered the book yesterday and it was shipped today. I',m looking forward to reading all the good tips. I'm glad to know other Sheltie owners are having similar issues. I guess that's what I find so helpful about this forum.

I'm looking forward to being able to play with her off leash as we did when she was just a few months old.

It's so nice to know I'm not the only one going through this. I'll definitely check out the book and the resources you all posted! Thank you!

For the person who asked, he's one year old as of February 5th....and yes, he's definitely harder to control now than he was when he was younger! I thought if I trained him well as a baby he'd stay that way. Joke's on me, I guess.

Exercise does really help my guy behave better inside the house but I don't think it does much for the chasing thing. Unfortunately, this winter hasn't been all that pleasant weather wise so I haven't been walking him regularly like I used to. I can tell a HUGE difference in him when we do walk on a regular basis though. Still, even then, he will take off after moving things. Hopefully after a lot of patience on my part and a lot of work, we'll get this under control!

He will begin developing restraint over the next 6mths as well, so dont lament. If you think about it, it is more unnatural if a young sheepdog didnt want to run and chase things. Farm dogs generally learn when and what to chase and when to show restraint. So can you give Spencer something he cis allowed to chase.

Tully was the worst kangaroo chaser (a prob because there are hundreds near my home). I never thought she would stop but I can now actually call her off the roos and at times she even ignores them. One big diff (besides age) is that I let my dogs chase rabbits and this keeps them happy. Deska is also better with his chasing if I let him run after my bike some times.

Control Unleashed Yahoo forum

Just curious to know from those of you who have joined the Yahoo forum ... How long did it take for you to be approved to join ?

(My membership has been pending for nearly a week)

Thanks.

Katherine,
I joined last week and it seem to only take a day or so.

The forum isn't as helpful as I had hoped. It seems to be more for trainers. And it has a lot of volume. I get 1 or 2 digests emailed a day.

I get more from here. I was even thinking we should start our own Control Unleashed topic, since many of us struggle with the same things and are just getting started with it.

I think that's a great idea! I'm on a couple of other forums (it emails directly to my home email)...I mostly delete, delete, delete! I prefer to spend my time here.

There is definitely ALOT to sift through, but there are newbies to CU there that ask good questions and save me having to draft one out myself! The trainers on that group give great answers and tips.

I think a CU group here is a fantastic idea! We can work on our dogs here and if needed we can always search the yahoo groups messages to see if we can find a solution there if we're stumped!

To be honest, the CU techniques have me a bit confused that's why I'm going through all their group messages to try and make more sense of it. But I did order the DVD (on it's way!) so hopefully being able to watch it will help!

I'll go start a CU thread.

Before I go and read the thread regarding the book, I'm wondering, has it helped your dogs who chase?

Koji has been a chaser since we got him. He's now a year and 8 months. He's just as bad as when he was a pup. He will chase anything that moves. That includes cars (ugh, I fear he'll pull out of his harness/slip collar), joggers, bikers, butterflies, bees (waiting for him to get stung), birds, leaves, dust, if it moves, he's after it. I know some of it comes from pent up energy. But jeez, taking him for a walk, puts a lot of wear and tear on my shoulder/wrist/elbow. Seriously, I have gotten tennis elbow (and tendonitis in my shoulder) because of him.

So, before I start more training and reading (since I have a lot of agility training to do too), I want to know. Does it work? I have a feeling I too will be carrying around treats whenever we go on a walk.

TIA.
