Clicker Training 101 (Please!!)

My dear Jazz was JRT/beagle. I took her on as an adult rescue. She was a great dog but she did have quite the nose to go long with her terrier spirit. She was smart, very smart but she did things when she wanted and how she wanted to do them. It took 4x longer to teach her anything than any of my Shelties. I remember standing in obedience class working on something and after what seemed like the 100th time with all new and original respones. I said "I swear my next dog will not be a terrier or a hound." It was a good thing she was cute. I did get an UKC and ASCA CD on her and she taught me more about obedience training than any dog before or since.

As Spike was my first dog, I really lost all confidence in my ability to train dogs. It wasn't untill Sandstorm that I finally feel I can really be effective training a dog! He is our fourth dog. That is why we carefully chose our breeder and it was really worth that effort. Looking back, I received terrible advice from people I thought knew what they were talking about. I still do- my hairdresser suggested the rolled up newspaper method!! She also suggested throwing him in the water if I wanted him to swim!! . I have no problem telling people I would never do that, but still cannot believe some actually still do it.
