clicker training ?'s

There is the box clicker, the starmark clicker and the i-click clicker.

The box clicker I think is the loudest. The starmark next. The i-click seems to be the quietest.

I used to use the starmark one but have switched to the i-click coz I sometimes train late at night and I worry my neighbours can hear it! It's really not that loud, just that I share walls with my neighbours.

Any one of them works just fine! They all serve the purpose of making a consistent click sound to mark behaviours.

Clean run, also has a nice one I ordered back two years ago.Its was like 2.50.Very nice one,not to loud, and it's easy to click.Fits on your finger, and lays nice in your palm.

I feel like a dummy when it comes to this and can't find a book on it at the library. Zak will come when I click it, so how do I use this to my advantage? What do the one's who use them mean when they say loading the clicker, or shaping? Where do I go to understand the lingo and start teaching Zak?
He know's his basic obediance and some rally, I just notice if I use in the yard he comes on a dime when I click it.

He's coming because he knows that the click means good things. Loading the clicker means to take small treats. Click and treat, click and treat over and over untill Zak knows that 'click' menas 'good things'

Shaping means to slowly introduce the behavior. Say you want your dog to open a fridge door by pulling on the tug. The first step would be to click when he puts his mouth on the tug. The second step would be clicking when he starts to pull, and the third step would be clicking when he opens the door.

Hope this helped!!!! :smile2:

This video was very helpful when I started clicker training with Nellie. This trainer has many videos with clicker training, check it out!

Emily is one of the best trainers online, she did all those Videos for NOTHING... I know she had a huge impact on me!
I am glad to hear she has done the same for others ... When I decided to stop with the pack-leader foolishness and intimidation and force compulsion training she was my source and inspiration, then I found a REAL dog-trainer and totally stopped watching a wanna be on TV!

I've never used clicker training before, but am familiar with the method. I started my new rescue (5 years old and NO training) with a box clicker, but found she's afraid of the click.

I'm slowly but surely loading the clicker, but she still shies away from it the first time. She's got a lot of noise issues that I'm trying to deal with right now.

my youngest Leo is pretty noise sensitive. I have used VERY successfully Lactium, bought from Swanson vitamins. The stuff is great and allowed my pup to be low enough on stressors to make better choices.

Wow is she (Emily) good. I can see watching lots of her videos. She explains it all very well, thanks for the link.

Lactium? Do you think I could get that at a health or natural foods store? What form does it come in, and how do you feed it? Is it a daily thing or just when training or around stressors?
