Clicker training

Great story! I can just see it!

I started clicker training but dropped it (for no real good reason). I'm thinking of starting it back up again.

An excellent book is The Power of Positive Dog Training" by Pat Miller. I liked it because it balanced clicker and verbal (sometimes you just don't have the clicker handy).
 
I began clicker training Punkin the first week I brought her home. What I didn't realize was that my cats were watching and paying attention. Now when I say "sit", I have a row of sitting pets all waiting for a nibble of liver treat.

Funny thing is that with a treat I get the SAME reaction with my two fools, speaking of the boys, the cat Mikesch and Toffee the Sheltie, lol Both sitting and waiting... Your story shows how effective positive reinforcement must be because even Cats are paying attention!!? That's proof enough for me LOL

By the way I ordered the Book Ania mentioned through Chapters online, but can you believe I went shopping for a clicker and didn't FIND one??? Needless to say I went to the dog bakery and spent my monthly dog-bakery allowance of $25?!?!? Was looking at various pet places for a clicker, but come home with rawhide bones, a 'Happy Growl-oween' bandanna and cheese treats instead... oh yeah and a pumpkin slice of dog cake.. and a brownie like thingee which looks like a gravestone lol

Will have to try the Walmart route, never thought of looking there! lol

AHHH I love it~:wink2:

We started with the clicker the ride home from Janets. I could not believe how well Trapp responded. Although I had been side tracked with company,Trapp now sits,& shakes with out using the clicker. Today we started working on 'watch me". He's getting it.

I decided I needed to work on this in particular,as with a blind kitty,Trapp does try to herd her.Not all the time,but when he is excited,he definately does try. She does know the house very well,but when she is being pounced on,she goes into a curl,and cannot seem to get her sense about her,and today I found her kind of in a lost state when Trapp was trying to play.

I do feel confidant that in time,he will realize that something is amiss with her,but right now all she is to him is a moving target to get where he wants her to go.
For the first time yesterday,Earnhardt put his body between Trapp & Bumper,he was just protecting her. Thats what makes him so special,as he really knows she cannot see.

There has been no hissing,or swatting with nails out,but he may some day find himself on the recieving end of a good swat from her. And it may take only that one swat for him to understand,but I would like to try to avoid it.
 
As far as finding clickers, I have found them in a few different places.

Petsmart: Look for the training area in the store. There is normally a kiosk outside the training area that has a plastic fish bowl with them in there. There are more expensive ones on the wire rack displays by the training area too, but, if you are like me, you'll lose at least one clicker a month to the hungry gremlins under the couch....never to be seen again.

Walmart: In the pets area (I know...duh) HOWEVER, at the Walmarts by me they are near the toys, not the training materials. Weird, I know. But just wanting to throw that out there.

Target: Also in the pet section. I've seen them there, but then there have been times when they haven't had any....so I dunno what that is all about.

LOL I don't use a lot of the clicker but I did performance puppy class with Diva this summer and we were using the clicker to teach them to run over and lay down on a mat. Diva was having problems but my cat Tanner figure it out first. I'd say place and he would run over to the mat. He didn't even get treats before. He just saw Diva getting them and thought what the heck.

Also I couldn't get Diva to bite down on the dumbbell when holding it. I used the clicker to pin point the behavior I wanted. I would tap the end,she would bite down, click , 3x problem solved. Works better then tapping them under the chin which just makes them worry.

We'll have to get smudge to keep us updated, and I love watching those videos... I am looking forward to tomorrows daily installment, hahaha
It's sorta like a soap opera, just better!!
Keep posting those, smudge :) I am going to learn from you, once I find a clicker in this darn city, LOL
 
I ordered mine on line. I prefer the iClickers, the click that they make is softer. My clicker obedience instructor used these too as she said the older ones had a very loud click and some dogs got timid and startled around them. I ordered a pack of 5 from www.clickertraining.com.
