Climbing Stairs?

Funny story...when Angel was a puppy, she was OK going up stairs, but couldn't come down.

I had the same issue with Sadie and Ginny when they were puppies. Its so much more scary going down than up. They got it eventually though with some encouragement and help from mama. :smile2:

Treats on the stairs is definitely the way to go. When he's more comfortable and has to learn to go down the stairs use lots of praise and encouragement and also stay close by his side. My two seemed to feel MUCH better about trying when I was close by or had a hand on them.

My puppy mill boy stayed on the couch for the first few days, tucked away in the corner. Until one day he explored. We had a slliding glass door to outside and no stair access on the side entry. The day we took him out the front door with stairs he freaked, not even willing to try the few stairs to outside.

Baby steps, over time, and all the love and security you can muster to be with him every step of the way. Treats are good incentives as was mentioned. I am glad that we had him used to the sliding door first until he got his bearings.

It's all good, thank you so much for rescuing a puppy mill darling. They need so much and you sound just like the right match. He is one lucky dog.

I just want to say how people like this forum have restored my faith in humanity. Thank you for being so generous with your love, time and money. This is not always easy but as you all know we are rewarded in spades with the love of our pups, on my shelties worst day he is better than me on my best day. I love him unconditionally. If i could i would buy a farm and just rescue shelties, but i know thats not possible so i'll have to be happy with.a rescue cat and dog :)
I walk max on the boardwalk by the beach and max gets alot of attention with his cuteness and of course you talk and i have to tell you at least 90% of the dogs i meet are rescued!! There are many good people in this world and thank you all!

Great tips

I am in a similar situation; I've just recently got my Belle from a gal who got her from a 'breeder' friend where she was used for puppies and confined alot.
Not a puppy mill, but all the same behaviors.

She will do our 5 steps to get in and out of the house, but she cowers at the steps in my parent's house.

She's coming along well. She will finally eat with me in the same room as her, where before she wouldn't; i had to leave the kitchen for her to eat.

Won't take treats from my hand, but will definitely scarf them down when I put them in front of her.

She's the sweetest thing ever. Loves to frolick in the yard, and is starting to grab at the sticks on the ground. Doesn't quite know how to play. ALmost got her to fetch pine cone today, it was a nice start!
