Coat is turning red! PLEASE help!

Some lines have red-blacks. Nothing you can really do about it. Sometimes the red is dead coat that needs to come out, but 90% of the time it's in the genes. Our family has black-black coats, but I have one dog that is half Apple Acres. When fed kibble, she turned a little bit red. Since the food switch, she has stayed black.

Wait! Maybe that's it. Last year Diva was on kibble and this year raw. Never thought of that.

I think a lot of it is genetic. My siamese is a seal-point, meaning she has dark brown/black markings on face, ears, legs and tail.

Her mum was a silver tabby, so had stripes on face, legs and tail.

You can just make out on Tigs stripes on her legs and tail in a slightly reddish shade of brown. As a seal point she should technically be 'pure'. How this would affected her in the show ring I have no idea.

She also reddens very slightly at the tips of her tail hair.

With siamese as they age their overall coat significantly darkens. Kittens have pure white coats, but Tigs at 5 now has a cream coat, with brown ticking and dark patches. This is natural, however it means that most siamese will only be shown to the age of 3 before their coat darkens.

As an aside in most animals black is not a 'true' colour but in fact a very very dark shade of brown.

Domino's coat also has a rusty colour in places. I agree with everyone else - try not to let it worry you - it has no reflection on how well you look after Fluffy. :smile2:

I'm going to tell you a secret, not all show dogs have jet black coats. Some people(not me) dye the coats black for shows and use spray on powders and chalk to make the coat black. :wink2: The real coat of alot of Tri dogs is rusty.
:

"Shhhhh" not suppose to say that it's a secret. :o

I am very disappointed. :( I try so hard to keep my dogs groomed and looking fairly decent. I was told tonight that Fluffy's coat was VERY red.

What I can I do to make it stop turning red? I really don't think Fluffy is outside that much. :uhoh: Not enough for it to be turning red this fast. I am afraid that if I don't keep her coat looking nice that nobody will trust me to keep my dog looking nice if I ever inquire about one of their puppies later on in life. So it isn't just a cosmetic thing for me. :(

Please help me. :(

We've used this as a supplement to help keep a black coat from rusting... you won't see results until the new coat comes in.

Seriously, though - don't let it worry you! You have two wonderful little dogs, and you do everything you can for their health and happiness. A rusted coat is absolutely no reflection on your care.

Jessica, as you can see, Boo is a Blue Merle...and he has some red spots on top of the black spots. I have been told a hundred things it could be and have tried to do all the things that sounded reasonable....they are still there. So if you ever find something that works...PLEASE let me know. I can't find it :confused2:

I read some others and ...

If you think it is hard water you might be able to get a filter to screw on the faucet when bathing her

Have you tried Ice on Ice? I would not use it every time but it might help. Also if y'all have read clay (I seem to remember some when I rode the bike up that way) then she might be getting some via static which Ice on Ice reduces.

White on White seems to de-red the little Sca gets though his is likely just red dirt :o

The fluffster looks great as she is so don't cry :biggrin2:

I second what everyone else has been saying, tri colours get rusty coats, in fact a lot of black animals do, even black horses and panthers have a red tinge. Revel was jet black up till about 6 or 7 then his coat started to go a bit rusty. I was showing him quite reguarly at the time and used Black on Black shampoo. (It rinses out so there is nothing left on the coat, it's just a colour enhancer). I don't really know if it made a difference, there was still a fair bit of red. Close examination of the hairs showed that it was the outer coat going red at the ends where the hair was dying off and there was no pigment. The ends were also thinner and curled over and looked more brittle.
Last year right in the middle of winter he had a massive moult after being poorly and the red had almost gone. I'm sure you will find that when Fluffy has a moult the red will go. Revel had not moulted this much since he was 18 months so the hair was past it's sell by date!
Someone in Holland (I think) did some research on rusty tri colours and they found that some were genetically more inclined to go rusty than others. Also certain foods do affect the colour. Specifically some brands of dried food and carrots were also mentioned.

Don't worry at all that this is in any way a reflection of your grooming, it's just one of the (few:lol:)downsides to owning a tri.

This might help if you can get it.. a lot of people here use it.

I have some of the black on black and I used it once. I also have some of the ice on ice. I guess I will use some of it, but I hate it. :dead:

Fluffy isn't even a year old. I keep thinking - if it's this red now how bad is it going to get later?

I am 99% positive we have hard water. We used to have tasty, good well water. We still have well water, but I won't drink it anymore. :uhoh: I'm not really sure if it is the water itself (we recently dug a new well either last year or the year before last) or if maybe it is the pipes making the water taste bad. I'm not really sure how all of that works!

Fluffy is starting to blow some coat though - mostly from her pants at the moment. It's just the regular gray undercoat though. Maybe when she sheds/blows the rest of it then it won't look so bad.
