This could happen with any of the toxic medicines like this. That's why they're so dangerous. You never know how your pup is going to react EACH time you give one of these dangerous pills. You saw the outward problems, think about the kidneys having to deal with this kind of toxin... month after month. There's a reason the majority of animals aren't living nearly as long as they used to and that cancer rates in canines has increased greatly. These medicines do way more harm than good. The rescue I work with and myself haven't had fleas nor used toxins in years. I don't know why people think they're so necessary. If you're willing to put a little effort in, you can really do your pup a favor.
