Concerned about Chandler's Pot Belly

I can only speak anecdotally regarding a good friend's older rescue (perhaps 8 - 10 years old ?). She was diagnosed approx 1 year ago and is being treated with lysodren. They have had to tinker / adjust the dosage (both up and down), but the dog is doing extremely well and you would not know that it has Cushings.

I know a woman (lives near my in-laws) who has a sheltie with Cushings. You would honestly never know anything is wrong with her. She is on some sort of medicine that she takes daily, and she runs and plays with our dogs every time we go visit.

She does tire a bit faster than our dogs, but she still runs around like crazy!

Katherine and Ashley thanks so much for your input. I wish the Cushings was Chandler's only problem.

I called the Vet back today and we had a long discussion about Chandler's quality of life. The rear legs that were affected by his Spinal Stroke are becoming weaker and more wobbly each day,his breathing sounds awful when he is sleeping which he does all day long,he has lost his enthusiam on walks,he is just out to do his buisiness and will lay down and wait for Gypsy to get done because he is too tired and I would imagine he has to be very uncomfortable with his stomach so blown up. We discussed the fact that we are artificially keeping him alive by giving him the Prednisone to induce his appetite and that normally when a dog refuses food and water for a few days or longer it is time to let them go. His refusal to eat went on for weeks until the Prednisone was given. I asked him what he would do if it were his dog and he said he would let him go if Chandler were his. He also made it clear he did not want me to make a decision on what he would do. We have a great relationship and have for many years so I know these words do not come easily for him and he does not take them lightly. I told him I really needed to sit on this a couple days and would call him with my decision. I pretty much know what my decision should be, I just need some time to let it sink in and spend some quality time just sitting in the park with my boy. There is a group of trees he enjoys laying in the center of so he can watch the squirrels run about. In his younger days he would chase them from tree to tree but now he just watches and dreams of the days when he would herd them and all the dogs that entered the park. Please keep us in your prayers so I make the right decision for the peace and well being of my Boy. Thanks Dawn

My heart is breaking for you, Dawn. I know how deeply you love Chandler and Gypsy and I can imagine what this is doing to you. Please know that whatever you decide, you have given Chandler the best possible life and more love than any pup could want. You are the very best person a dog could have.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. We're here, for whatever you need.

I'm so sorry to read this, Dawn.

I know how devoted you are to your pups, and it breaks my heart that you are facing this decision with Chandler. At the same time, I'm so glad that you have a vet who you know and trust who is there to help you through.

I hope that you can find some peace in knowing that you have loved and cared for Chandler the best you could. As has been said, I don't think any little dog could have asked for a better mom.

Poor Chandler....poor Dawn. Its hard enough to know what's right when the vets can diagnose the problem; a million times worse when its one guessing game after another.
And having to make the decision to help a beloved pet to the Rainbow Bridge...its very difficult.
We're continuing to pray for you and your family.
