Consensus, Safest Heartworm med??

Hello from the foothills above Fresno!

I used Interceptor forever on my Aussies. I used Heartgard after Interceptor was off the market. My sheltie which I have not had tested for the mutation even though I ordered the kit, is doing well on Sentinel and I intend to stick with Sentinel on her and Heartgard on the shepherd.

Remember to have the dog tested negative for HW before using anything. HW is SO crazy prevalent in Northern CA.

Another vote for sentinel/interceptor.

When sentinel was off the market, we went with heartgaurd over trifexis.
Gain had been tested for MDR and was normal/normal.

Cindy and Gavin in the bay area :D

I ordered the test kit before the holidays and wanted to wait through the holiday closures. Maybe I will quit lagging and have Melli tested now before I get them tested/buy more product in a few months.

Sounds like Cali is chiming in on the HW vote. Really funny since the state has NO water to even support mosquitoes this year!

Rescues in Bakersfield have told me they have never had a HW positive dog. Fresno it's iffy. Northern CA is crazy positive for HW. Lucky us.

I switched my Shelties over to Heartgard when they stopped producing Interceptor. I have had no issues - just remember to break it up into their food.

Sentinel is free of Ivermectin, as is TriFexis.

I personally have a problem with administering Sentinel or Trifexis, as my dogs are also ingesting the flea/tick prevention in those two products.

In my part of the country, I withhold the flea/tick prevention through the winter months. But they are on HW prevention year round - we have had too many Shelties come into rescue HW positive.

For our Collies, we order Interceptor online from Australia. Since I have not had a Collie foster in a couple of years, I don't know the websites, but maybe our friends down under can help with that?

We tried Trifexis when Interceptor disappeared from the market. One of my Shelties is allergic to the Comfortis in it.

We're now on Heartgard and all 3 are fine with it.
