Considering Sheltie

Thanks guys for all the helpful advice so far. Just visited some pups this past weekend and deciding between some of the shelties in the litter.

I met a beautiful bi-blue girl, but it struck me odd that she didn't have the usual grey or merle spotting that you would find in regular bi-blues. She looked more like a color-headed white with heavy black spots. Does anyone here know if bi-blue shelties develop the grey pigmentation over time? In other words do start of white and black and then gradually develop the grey in their coat?

The other dog I met was heterochromatic sable merle boy. Loved his coat and his temperment, but the eyes have me somewhat concerned. Right now one is a dark blue and the other is a dark brown. Hardly noticeable when they're only 7 weeks old but does the coloring in the eyes change over time? I'm curious to see if one will turn bright blue as it ages and the other eye remains dark over time. Would be off putting to have such a drastic balance when the pups are older.

one blue eye and one brown eye- really not so bad.....
Cranberry- adult puppy

as for the biblue- she could be a CHW.... my biblue boy was very light gray as a puppy but you could tell the difference between the white and the grey fur....
and yes, he's got one blue and one brown eye too:winkgrin:

One question for you Calliesmom -- the Biblue girl that I was looking at has a similar pattern to your dog. Definitely has less grey, but there are streaks of grey between her heavily marked black spots. The breeder told me that the dog will develop the grey and pigmentation over time as it matured. How did your boy's coat change over time? Did it get noticeably more grey? I assume the pink nose also blackens over time?

I for one was just never a fan of the two different colored eyes (slightly off-putting for me probably due to some childhood trauma involving a scary man with a glass eye).

so the puppy coat is a different color/texture than the adult coat so the grey is very light. The grey is definitely darker now and his nose has gotten more black too. I need to take some new pix but this one is from his 4th birthday
sorry to hear about the childhood incident but a lot of people that think they won't like the blue eye/s in a sheltie find they end up liking the blue eyes...

Thanks for sharing the pictures of Cranberry Calliesmom! She looks adorable. The Bi-blue girl that I'm leaning towards seems to have a lot of white factoring. She does have grey pigmentation on her body, but it is extremely light. Any general rules on knowing whether or not she'll turn out to be a heavily marked color headed white vs. a bi-blue? Would love her to have a darker coat like her dad, but not sure if she develops this over time (fyi her dad is Dylan, Cameo I have a Dream Stud dog so you can google the picture).

Regardless of the color I do think she is the pup of choice. Very quiet and well behaved as compared to the rest of her litter. Temperament was well liked by my girlfriend and I.

temperament and personality are the things to go by.
my biblue is a boy and he's Destin. Cranberry is also a boy and he's a sable merle.
you can only get a color headed white if both parents are white factored. Stud doesn't appear to be white factored but would need to see a picture of the dam to get any kind of idea if there's a potential for white factoring....
do you have a pic of the puppy? the gray does seem to be really light in some puppies but it should darken as the puppy coat changes to the adult coat.

Is there a way to post photos? Can show you a few pictures of the girl.

Only premium members can include photos in their post and avatar. There's a tab at the top if you want to get a premium membership (which helps keep the site going).

The other option is to save your photos to a photo sharing site and paste the link into your post, like what you did with the mum's link (if you use Facebook or Instagram make sure the photos are made public).
