Oh!!! LUCKY!!! If they had a CU class here, I would sign up for it. It'll be great to get guidance on this. But sadly, no one comes here! haha! Let us know if you go for class and what you learn there!

Since money is the big factor right now, I'm trying to find out of she has a class further out.

BTW, I see you're in Singapore. My boss go to Singapore about twice a year for PUB (for the water stuff). I'm always curious about it since he seems to really like visiting. And people are so water wise there. :)

There are a number of trainers who have been through Leslie McDevitt's class that have gone on to do their own CU class. This is probably one of them?

Yep! We're living on that tiny almost non-existent dot on the map! It's one of those crazy fast paced cities - makes a good short holiday or a stopover if you're travelling to the neighbouring countries. Thank your boss for the great work he's doing with our water! We are a resource scarce country, so we try to conserve or recycle everything! Oh, if you ever get to come here with your boss, give us a shout! We'll give you the grand tour complete with a sheltie gathering! :biggrin2:

Well, I just signed up for the CU class in April. They said I can pay then, so I'll save up my money. Btwn Koji's next agility class and this, that's about $200. Ouchie.

I've seen a couple of people say they downloaded the LAT instructions at the CU site, I cant' find it. Can some send me a link please. Thanks!

If I'm ever in Singapore, I'll let you know. I'd LOVE a Sheltie welcome. It'll ease the withdrawal symptoms of missing my own. :)

I downloaded them from http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CU_Dogs/files/. If you don't want to bother with registering for the group, I can email the LAT instructions to you.

I have also learned that my agility instructor has been through CU training; she has a handful of people that are getting together informally to practice some of the CU concepts. I'm going to join them next week to see what it is like.

This past weekend I went out to watch for a while at a local agility trial. I happened to see a handler and her Aussie begin their run, only to see the dog go "over threshold"---- twirling, jumping up on the handler, missing two obstacles. The handler aborted the run and exited the ring. My first thought was that the Aussie reminded me of Snap at this stage.

Kat, I too find myself thinking "oh, over threshold" and then coming up with whatever CU techniques might help. I think observing other dogs, how they react, what their handlers do to help their dogs is a good idea. Helps us read our dogs better so we can help them overcome their issues.

You guys are lucky!! You can get hands-on help from people who know the CU techniques!

My DVD just arrived yesterday!! So I'm hoping that'll make up for the lack of real time guidance. I'll keep you lot posted on what I learn. I'm making notes! The first DVD was alot about observing what each dog in the seminar does when it's in a new environment and not given any instructions/feedback from the handler.

When people do the Relaxation Protocol, and they do sits, how do they return to their dogs? When Ella sits, she doesn't generally move until I release her, but are we supposed to do this? Or should we sit for 5 seconds...treat...sit for 10 seconds..treat, etc. Do you give a command sit everytime?

I read the entire handout that was give, but was not clear on it. Ella is not a hyperactive dog when she is training with me, but I'm just trying to work on her skills, as well as start with the CU training.

A second question is that with the CU training, what order do most people start in? I read the entire book when I was on vacation last week and want to get to work, but wasn't sure it most people start from night one and work on? Or do they just focus on what they think their dog needs the most work on.

Romeo's generally like that too when we train - not intense and hyperactive! When we do Relaxation Protocols, he ends up lying down, which is fine, because what we want is for them to be as relaxed as possible, so a sit or a down, whichever works for your dog.

The only command I give is for him to go to his mat, where he will automatically lie down, then I start the RP. I go through each one, never clicking after each (because that excites him too much), I'll just walk up slowly and give the treat (never tossing also because if he's lying with his head down, he'll get up). I do each item continuously - so it's "Got to Mat" then when he lies down, I go through the 1st item (wait 5 secs), then walk up to him and give treat, 2nd item (wait 10 secs), walk up & give treat, etc. No commands in between.

If Romeo does get up at any point while we are going through the items, I send him to mat again and go back to doing the last item on the list when he was still lying down.

If you join the CU Yahoo group, I think you can download MP3s of the commands so you can play them on headphones instead of having to constantly refer to a piece of paper!

Does that help? I hope I made sense!

With regards to where to start, I tried to start from Night 1 but got impatient :biggrin2: and wanted to do the LAT game so I just went ahead and did it. I don't think there is much of a problem if you trained 2 or 3 techniques concurrently (tho' you might find some complement others - like whiplash + leave it complements a good recall). I can't work on any of the box stuff because I don't have access to any dogs that I can work alongside, so we're just doing LAT alot, the Give Me a Break game, the self-control techniques (Leave Its) and RP. I'm gonna work on the massage soon. I also use premack principles wherever I can.
