Covered with burrs

I never used ShowSheen on burrs, but I have always used a product made for horses called Cowboy Magic. It's a light oil that acts as a conditioner and leaves a shine on the animal (dog or horse) and burrs literally fall out of the coat with it. You just rub a small amount in your hands and then through the coat. You can find it at tack shops or online. It's amazing stuff!

Hi Ann: I have Cowboy Magic too. I just hate getting the stuff on my hands and then having to try to hold the brush and comb. Truth be told, I get hubby to apply it and then I do the grooming. I think I would be bathing the dog after using it as it is a little greasy and collects dirt. On the other hand, the show sheen has worked for me well and helped to keep new burrs from sticking. I see my hay is being cut so those horses of mine better not need either for a couple of days!

Beth, if you're going to go back there later this summer, I could suggest putting a child's t-shirt on Daisy when you walk her or she is laying in the grass. Even a light weight one piece pajama with no feet. I put t-shirts on Meggie and her BFF Lucy when I was in NY to try to prevent ticks from getting on them. It worked pretty well.

I love this idea as a tick barrier. Found a dead one on the floor so was thinking how to keep them off Danny Boy.

If definitely helped immensely. They looked like silly little nuts, but who cares. You still have to check their paws and heads quite closely though. Meggie's very first tick was right near her eye. Scared the bejeesus out of me.

That's a good idea....at least that would keep her belly free from the pesky buggers....and the walking helped...not letting her lay in the grass will really help...she can lay on the deck, but not in the dirt....

I had her groomed on Monday, and she looks beautiful now! Of course, on Tuesday morning she went rolling in the dirt! Here is a pic of her freshly groomed:

I wet the fur and put in some hair conditioner. I use Mane and Tail conditioner but I think any conditioner would do. Let it sit for a while, then the burs just slide out.

I find a slicker and comb work well for the small bits left.
