Curious 9-month Puppy ate cotton balls and raisin bread!

Yesterday my curious 9-month old boy, Charlie snooped into the bathroom (I left it open by accident,) and he ate about 3 cotton balls. He also ate about 3 small slices of gluten-free raisin bread yesterday as well. (I'm guessing there were probably about 10-12 raisins total that he ate between the slices of bread).

I know that raisins can be toxic to dogs, so I've been concerned since yesterday and keeping a close eye on Charlie. I wanted to get some feedback and opinions on here. He has had 3 normal-looking bowel movements since getting into all of this, and he has been acting fairly normal. (energetic, alert, and normal appetite)... Although right now, he is napping. Should I be concerned at all?

Tomorrow we have a vet appointment -- just a check-up and routine vaccination, but I was wondering if it might be a good idea to call the Emergency Vet beforehand, just in case.

I think you're OK with the cotton balls, but I don't know how many raisins are too many. He's acting fine, so that's a good sign, and it's good that you're seeing the vet tomorrow. I would think toxicity would be evident fairly quickly but I don't know for sure. If it would put your mind at ease, I'd call the emergency vet and see if they'll answer that over the phone for you. Ours is very good about answering questions if it saves you coming in.

Watch for unproductive straining, grumbling tummy, unproductive gagging, or any signs of distress.

I have had dogs consume bits of fluff from disemboweled toys with no problems.

Raisin bread shouldn't be critical unless it was like a box of raisins. Again, watch for any signs of distress though.

I had an Aussie eat a Bible once, shoes, 2-week vitamin pack, a chicken leg, and hard plastic.

Just be vigilant.
 
I found this chart online -- it was by some beagle folk -- it might help you feel a bit better.

The minimum toxic dose is approximately1 grape per pound of body weight.

15 lb dog = 12-14 grapes could be deadly
25 lb. dog = 23 grapes could be deadly
50 lb. dog = 50+ grapes could be deadly
75 lb. dog = 75 grapes could be deadly

Raisins, having lost their water content are considered more toxic at 6 raisins per kg of body weight, or 2-3 raisins per pound of body weight. Think how many raisins are in ONE small snack pack of raisins ? maybe enough to kill your dog.

15 lb. dog = 30-45 raisins could be deadly
25 lb. dog = 50-75 raisins could be deadly
50 lb. dog = 100-150 raisins could be deadly
75 lb. dog = 150-225 raisins could be deadly

What are the symptoms?
Symptoms appear 6-24 hours after the dog eats raisins or grapes (average is 12 hours). Initially, symptoms are gastro-intestinal signs, followed by kidney problems.

Vomiting is usually the primary sign, with diarrhea, depression/lethargy, anorexia, colic, dehydration and sharply decreased urine output. The course of the toxicosis is anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks. Dogs with kidney problems have a guarded to poor prognosis.
 
Sounds like you may have dodged the bullet...No Vomiting or diarrhea, does he normally have that many BMs ? not lethargic. Watch for excessive or lack of urination and definitely call the emergency vet if he's not acting like himself. Should have seen symptoms by now I would think...mention it at the appointment tomorrow.
 
It occurred to me that if the dog doesn't chew the rasins, but simply bolts them down, he's probably not going to get the full impact of the fructose content; the raisins will probably go right through him more-or-less in one piece.
 
Good point. Something I read indicated relative undigestability and passing through whole (much like Melli and carrot chunks).

Hoping this pup is still doing well.

This is an excellent point! Trusting that Charlie is continuing to do well.

I went to the vet this morning, and she thought that he looked okay, but wanted to take some blood and run some tests just in case. I'm still waiting to hear back for the results, but I'm hoping that they'll be normal.
