Darla's broken leg update

Another update...

The specialist got back to my vet, who informed me that he agreed with my research and everything I had said. The specialist thinks that the cast has stayed on too long and that the leg needs some gentle exercising. He thinks that the bones will bridge, so cross fingers she won't need another operation. So we are off today to get the cast off!

Unfortunately Darla was very sick last night, vomit and diarrhoea everywhere! We had to chuck her snugly bed as it would not have survived a wash, but we had another on stand-by. Poor pup, she has been through so much! Back onto the boiled chicken and rice for a day or two.

Bravo to you for all the work you have done on research. I swear I understand your story completely I been down the same road and had to take matters in my own hand like you. Your doggie will be fine as long as your in control, your going to get her well I just know it.

I was reading a famous vet doctors book on cancer, at the same time I was reading about the methods he used in books and discovered his methods actually were listed in another book that says they cancelling one another out in the way he used them. I pointed this out to someone who spent money to travel to this doc and go through his method for healing for her pet that had cancer (hence the reason she brought the book back that I read). Long story short she paid $400 to enter to a convention where this vet and many more were and showed him my research, he was proven wrong. Sadly he wrote the whole book proving how he saves lives and is famous for it and it was all false according to other science books. She of course took credit for my research, this big famous doc was quite embarassed and sadly I dont know how many people traveled and paid for treatment as a last resort to save their pets, that could not have worked the way he used it.

Poor baby, hope she's back to her old self soon.

Great news from the specialist! Fingers crossed the healing starts! :fl

So now it's been six weeks since the disappointing result of Darla's last X-ray. In that time she has been bandage free and doing hydrotherapy sessions twice a week. She has also been doing controlled leash walks for 10 minutes everyday, physiotherapy and massages and various other tricks such as sits and downs to get her using the leg normally.

At first, as the bone hadn't healed, so was very wobbly on it, would limp and hold it out at funny angles. It was terrifying to allow her to walk around more and I felt her leg plate everyday as I was paranoid it would pop again. I think the hydrotherapy especially got her using that leg with confidence and in the end she was swimming up to 16 minutes per session. Everyday we saw an improvement and by the end of the six weeks she was hardly limping.

Darla had her X-ray two days ago and I am delighted to tell you all that her bone has finally healed!!!!! They will keep the plate in (it hasn't moved) unless she has problems with it later and we are to gently increase her exercise of the next 4 weeks, the physio wrote us out a plan. We finally have our fantastic loveable puppy back to a relative normal life.

She has always had severe sickness and diarrhea from sedation (she's been under more times in her short life than I can remember), and this time is no exception. The vets know this and they still recommend I feed her when I get her home, so 6 hours after she has been sedated. I gave her a small meal of boiled chicken and rice which she gobbled up and all seemed well. The next morning, my fiancé came down to find diarrhea all over the floor. I had to give my poor pup a bath to get it off her feet :( I didn't feed her until 1:30 in the afternoon, boiled chicken and rice again and all seemed fine. Then she had another small meal at 6pm which seemed fine, gobbled up again! It wasn't until we were in bed at 11pm that we heard her being sick. We went down, cleaned it up, gave her a cuddle and went to bed. My fiancé said she had also been sick this morning, not much of it though, so he didn't give her breakfast. No diarrhea so far today. Should I starve her for 24 hours and then do a small meal of chicken and rice?

Oh such great news that her leg has finally healed up nicely!!!!! All that physio work and the exercises made all the difference, way to keep up with them and being consistent. You should be proud!

I'm sorry she is being sick for the last day. I am hoping it settles down. I would definitely switch to chicken and rice for a couple of days but I am not sure I would starve her now that she had been sick for more than 24 hours... Make sure she is drinking water and staying hydrated.

I don't have that much experience in post-sedation vomiting and diarrhea so lets see what other members recommend. I'm sending good thoughts for her to feel better quickly!

Thanks Meldor :smile2: I am so proud of Darla and how she has kept her cool throughout the whole ordeal, more so than me! Considering she has missed out on so much over her last 4 months of limited movement and confinement, she is surprisingly well adjusted. It just goes to show how amazing dogs are and they can literally cope with anything that is thrown at them.

Yes, I very much welcome any suggestions on feeding her since she was sick this morning. She seems fine in herself, playing and chewing on her stag antler. I just don't want to make her tummy worse by feeding her too soon. She is drinking so hopefully no worries there!

I'm glad darla is on the mend, I would call your vet especially since they know your dog and maybe he could offer some good advice about the diarrhea . I hope she feels better soon

I am so happy to hear that your girl is on the mend! Can't wait to hear all about her adventures as she gets stronger.

Hope her stomach is better soon.

I'm probably going to spell this wrong as I haven't had my coffee this morning but maybe Darla should have some Metranidazole and Serenia administered, post anesthetic, by the vet and then a few days on both given at home.

It's wonderful that Darla's leg has healed! I agree with chicken and rice, but I would divide it into several small feedings.
