De Casa Swishy Tails...got thin~

Abbie has a Trapp tail, and Duncan has a Jasper tail. Abbie sheds massively from her tail when she is blowing coat! Duncan JUST started to grow some wispies of longer fur from his tail. I hope this is the beginning of "big boy" fur.

I wouldn't worry if there aren't marks or anything.

It could be from blowing coat....but keep an eye on the tail-pullers as well. I know that Emma pulled Indy's tail completely bald at one point....it was just a little stick!

What did you do to stop Emma?

These two are constantly running, playing, and wreastling! I can't possibly be out there watching them every moment. And they love it outside.

Now if I even see Jasper clinging on to Trapp's ear, ruff,I scold him.Trapp's ruff is finally starting to get full again. But I had to do a trim on him some time ago.

What did we do to stop Emma from plucking Indy bald trying to get him to run?

We got Figaro.

We watched them and told her to stop.

We sighed and tried to protect Indy's tail.

Keep in mind we didn't WONDER if she was doing it...we SAW her do it....LOTS.

Could be diet, could be coat blow, although males typically dont blow as much as females, so generally it isnt as noticeable on their tails. Could be medical reasons, although both suffering I would tend to not think genetic unless they have the same sire or dam ( I cant remember who's from who and if they share parents). As far as the coat chewing, thats genetic, intact males are more likely to be chewers. They can mow down coats to nothing including their own where they can reach it, i've seen on someones sheltie...She thought he had thyroid issues, worm issues, nope turned out he could reach his rear and chewed it...So if you have one chewer he could be doing his own as well as the other one...

Actually, I'm pretty sure Michele was saying only Trapp's tail was looking thin.

Jasper and Trapp have the same father (Figaro) but different mothers. Figaro has never had a coat problem, and doesn't do any significant shedding. Emma and Sasha do the typical serious mommy coat blow after having puppies, but then regain some serious fur afterwards. The only dog at my house with coat issues is Indy who is completely unrelated to all of my other dogs. Indy has thyroid issues.

ahh I thought she was saying both were getting thin...
Yes the post whelp/wean coat blow is like nothing you've ever seen!!!!!!!!!! Mine have usually what looks like 3 stands of fur on them..they look like the old man comb over:lol:

It's just Trapp that has thinning of his tail. Jasper has not had thinning of anything coat related.Neither one have blown a coat yet.Jasper will be 1yr old in a few days. Trapp is going on 14 months.

I know we have had some real issues with Jasper, pulling on Trapp's ruff or ears, but that happens when I am outside and we are playing.

When Trapp goes to get ball, frisbee whatever the object is that is being thrown,Jasper will grab on to Trapp just behind his ears, and run right along side of him.

He does stop when I tell him to let go,and does not go back for a second mouthful.

Both pups have same dad, differant moms~

Sadie's coat in general is reminding me alot of her mother's coat after having puppies. She went from having a thick, gorgeous coat to looking naked, especially her tail.

Sadie has been through a lot this past summer though, so for her it could be a combination of things. The prednisone she was on for her paralysis DEFINITELY made her loose coat during the summer, not to mention the stress. That coupled with the weight loss food I had her on is probably what made this blow particularly bad. In the few days I've added fish oil back into her diet I've noticed a definite improvement in her coat, but it will probably take a while for it to get thick again.

That being said, all three of mine having been shedding particularly badly this fall.

I'd also like to mention that while some shelties have beautiful full tails, other don't. Milo, my parent's sheltie has always had a scraggly, rats tail compared with my three.

Diva did a serious coat blow around 13 months and she lost alot on the tail. Really freaked me out as none of my other dogs did that. We ran a complete thyroid profile which was totally normal. 2 months later her coat was coming back and the tail thicker than ever.

She is losing coat massively again after the puppies but her tail is still thicker than when she was 13-14 months old. Although, I am sure I haven't seen the worse yet.
