Deciding on euthanasia is horrible

So sorry to read there is now your turn to make this horrible difficult decision, and it is equally difficult even if you have tried it several times.

For me it has always been important that afterwards I could not say "I should have done this earlier".

When now I have the opportunity to spare them from unnecessary pain and suffering, then my dogs should not live for me  even though it was the very biggest wish I had.

Tears running down my cheeks when I read the post from Shelby's mom:
She some how just told us, we could tell by the look in her eyes that it was time. I laid on the floor with her and just brushed her and told her it was OK to leave us

I feel with you. :hugs

i 100% agree with you in this. better one day early, than one day too late!
it is a very difficult decision, but also an act of love. being unselfish, give them a chance to go peacefully before suffering starts.

I agree about never wanting to think that you should have done it earlier. Though I sometimes questioned my decision about putting my previous dog down, I know my heart would have been broken even more if I had let him suffer longer. The greatest gift I could give him was freedom from suffering.

Thank you everyone... Your words are helping me and will help me as i go alone to say that final goodbye.

His appetite has picked up on prednisone the last few days and he isnt showing signs of pain to the vet or me. She wasnt that worried about increased respiratory rate yet. I am monitoring closely, i have given him permission to go, and at the slightest decline i will take him in as we are right on that edge. The nice thing is at least we will make it through my son's bdAy tomorrow (and mine the next day) and my soon to be 9 year old son, at least won't have to associate his bday with losing his dog.

Great words of wisdom. I am watching my Lucky who is 14 and 4 months old.
I know one day sooner then later I will have to decide. Certainly not an easy
decision but he will let me know and I will abide to his wishes. He has been
such a fantastic sheltie, and I am so fortunate he has been a big part of our
lives. His spirit will live on in this house forever.

Thank you :-) And that's actually why my puppy is named Spirit. She carries his spirit in her.

Yes, it is horrible, and you never know for sure when the time is right.

For me, the most horrible was I had to make the decision while sitting on the beach in the Domican Republic. My dog was slowly failing with liver disease and he went into seisures while I was away. He was looked after though by my housekeeper who had him rushed to emergency. Sitting on the beach and telling the vet to put him to sleep was devastating. I was not there with him. He was my heart dog.

I guess all I'm saying is don't wait too long....don't prolong it for your benefit of keeping him around a little longer. If he is suffering or if there is no chance, you are not doing yourself or the dog any favours by dragging it on.

I know it hurts. My heart goes out to you. cry!

oh, BarbV it may be even more terrible when you can not be with them until the end and can not say goodbye.

You did it and it is in such a situation we must be strong and unselfish !

Thank you again for this thread. After letting Toby go to heaven to night, i am rereading it and it brings me great comfort.

I really feel with you, it is a difficult decision to make, but we have to be realistic.

But therefore is it anyway some sad and hard days to come through.

But you have the good memories of Toby you can recall, once you have dealt with the grief.

Sleep well little Toby :hugs
