Diamond Suspends Production

I a'm actually shocked to learn this same plant that's in trouble was one of the ones in 2006 that didn't have appropriate quailty assurance tests and ended up possibly killing hundreds of dogs due to to a mold in the corn known as aflotoxin. Even more alarming is they started getting complaints about six months or more before they actually pulled it. They really just don't care.

What is going on here??? Please stop feeding any foods that are linked to this company or plant as they clearly have safety issues and you're taking a huge gamble every time you scoop their food and give it to them.

Here's a story about the 2006 recall --http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10771943/ns/health-pet_health/t/toxic-pet-food-may-have-killed-dozens-dogs/#.T6aip-um-EY

I thought BB was manufactered by Diamond, too?

Blue Buffalo is made by CJ Foods NOT Diamond.

This is the list of foods manufactured by Diamond:
Foods manufactured:
Artemis
Canidae
Diamond
Kirkland Signature Brand Pet Food
Natural Balance
Solid Gold Health Food for Pets
Taste of the Wild
Wellness (not all)

Just about every commercial food out there seems to have had there share of recalls. Even Orijen(I do love that food) has had at least one in the past... I googled it.
If you want to be 100% safe all the time make your own dog food. But, then there is the trial of making sure everything is balanced nutritionally.

If I am not mistaken FROMM has never had a recall.. Im sure there are more but you are correct.... if you make it yourself... you are 100% sure what goes in your dogs tummy!!!

You might change your tune had your dog died being part of that trial, wouldn't you? That's not a fair statement. Animals shouldn't have to die and people shouldn't have to get ill in order for them to get it right. Things shouldn't be sold until they've been through such a trial. That really isn't too much to ask. Besides these recalls are for things like not catching mold that was growing in the corn or using imported ingredients from China -- Please tell me how that has anything to do with them trying to make sure everything is balanced or even an imbalance?? It has to do with them lowering/cutting costs and cutting ingredient quality and cutting quality control.

Fromm has been making food since 1904 and I, too, couldn't find one recall. It's not normal and it's not okay and it's certainly not excusable.

I didn't say it was excusable!.... but it happens! Over and over again! No it doesn't make it right and it's very sad. I will not feed anything made by Diamond. Thankfully I have found out that Wellness Core is not made at the Diamond plant. I did feed TOTW in the past, but will not go back....
I personally very much resent your remark.

A statement from Wellness... apparently this company learned something this time.
We no longer produce any products at Diamond and ended this relationship in March. We have expanded our own manufacturing facility in Mishawaka, Indiana and are currently in the process of bringing the majority of our Wellness dry food production into this facility. We are happy to discuss our quality assurance and manufacturing processes with you. Please call our Consumer Affairs team at (877) 227-9587 with any questions. We will be open on Sunday from 9am until 5pm eastern time and Monday from 8am until 6pm eastern time. Thank you.

Thanks for the information on Wellness and their message, SheltieLuver. It's positive that they've established a phone number people who are concerned can call, and that they've moved their production.

Everyone who feeds commercial dog food needs to be concerned and vigilant about how and where their food is made. There are dangers inherent in both commercial and raw food to both pets and humans. The important thing is to be aware of your dog's health and not to discount any sudden illnesses, and to be careful how you handle food.

This is a good time to point out that dog bowls should be washed in soap and hot water after EVERY meal, no matter what your dog(s) eat!!! Stainless dishes can be put in the dishwasher. Water bowls should also be washed daily. Dog bowls are potent sources of bacteria if they're left sitting with food particles and saliva in them. You wouldn't use the same dish without washing it; neither should your dog.

Ann,

You took the words right out of my mouth. There is no 100% guarantee for humans or our furry kids, whether you are feeding commercial or raw....the risks exist at either end.

Unfortunately, the onus is on the pet owner to know what they feed and where it comes from.

Myself, I was not even aware that all these brands were being manufacted by the same manufacturer until the first recall notice when out 2 weeks ago.

In hindsight, when the first recall went out for a brand I didn't even know, I should have raised a red flag for all brands manufactured at this plant.

For now, it seems to be limited to this one SC plant. But to be cautious, we are pulling just about everything right now at my store.

Its unfortunate, because I know that some of this is really good food (from an ingredient point of view). It will take a long time for brand loyalty to come back. And in the meantime, I wonder what consumers will switch to in the meantime. This recall took out so many favoured brands, that it leaves mainly the Canadian products (Horizon, Orijen, Now, Go, Summit, Performatrim to name a few) and the crap food (e.g. Purina, IAMS, Eukanuba).

And didn't Kirkland have a recall recently as well?
