Sheesh, all I do is remove the 9V battery, set it on the table, and after dinner is done, put battery back. I shouldn't have used the term unhook. And as others have noted, I do it to calm my dog, not to stop him barking (NOTHING stops his barking). If there's a fire while the battery is out of the smoke detector, it'll most likely be in the kitchen where I am, armed w/a fire extinguisher.
If it makes you feel any better Jeff, we got new smoke detectors recently as ours were well over 10 yrs old.
