Distance Work

Bud's distance book is a really good one.
Sharon I'd like to see the video of Shadow running the baseball diamond. That would be really neat!

Agility

Will do as soon as there is no snow on the ground and the park puts back the bases. It is pretty easy to teach.

I watched a video of a guy (or was it a lady?) on crutches guide her dog around an agility ring with mostly his/her voice (the person really couldn't hobble fast enough!). It was amazing!

We were just starting to work on distance work when I had to quit...moving here...

We started with having them go around things...we used a toy or a treat and just tossed it on the other side of the object....

To get them to go ahead of us we used a food tube or a toy...and tossed it over the jump...for weaves we used a touch ball..basically just a ball stuck on a stick thats stuck in the ground...sending them thru the weaves and then they touch the ball with their nose.

Thats as far as I got..cuz we moved... LOL So can't help with the next step.

That reminds me of an incredible team that I've had the opportunity to watch compete a couple times. The team is Dennis Murphy and Bodhi. Dennis has a degenerative disease and basically has very limited mobility. He has taught his dog all kinds of directional commands and the dog has outstanding discrimination.

I found a video on youtube of them when Dennis was using a walker. He is now using a segway. It's amazing to watch.

Here's an article from Clean Run about them:

Holy moly!! That is impressive!!! Only with a border I bet. lol. Now THAT is distance work.

A woman in my agility class uses a scooter. It's been amazing to watch her and her service dog. Which, btw, wasn't officially a service dog to begin with. She was a pet. But when things got bad, she did some crash course training and now her pet is also her service dog. Agility is her "play/down time". And she loves it. Now, THEY need distance work, but that's only because the dog is used to working so closely to her. It's awesome to watch when both dog and handler have a great night. (they did last night. did better than me and koji).

I need to do some training. I'm thinking I'll use our round coffee table. It's something I can do while I'm at home, watching tv, etc.

That is simply amazing. I loved what Dennis said in the Clean Run article about Bohdi not tolerating a long stay at the start line when his wife was handling because he knew she didn't need the extra time.

Okay. Help. I think I just taught Koji the wrong thing. Good thing it was only ONE session.

I'm having him go around our coffee table. I was saying "go around" and now I"m thinking that was bad because "go" should mean "go on" and do whatever obstacle is in front of you.

Versus. using "out". Dangit!

Okay, so. I'm facing the table (table in front of me) and I want him to go around it. Do I say "go" or "out"?

If I'm facing forward and the table is to the right (or left) of me, do I say "out"?

The funny thing was, towards the end, I'd say, "go around" and he'd go around Miko and not the table!!! (who was waiting for some sort of treat - so hard to train one when the other is there). Oh it was hilarious!

So. I'm obviously doing something wrong. Help please. Which command should I be using? On the upside (table is about 2.5 ft long) I was about 10 feet away sending him around. But he wasn't consistent.
