Does your sheltie talk?

Annie Laurie is our vocal girl. When we come home, she wriggles excitedly and makes a high pitched stacatto sound that, as you pet her, changes into a low, throaty happy moan of joy! If any Sheltie in the house is not behaving according to her strict standards, she starts with a low growl that becomes a loud snarl (sounds just like my 6th grade teacher) if the offender doesn't stop.

Bits "mutzes," a soft, almost voiceless through-the-nose low sound of pleasure when you rub her face.

Layla speaks with her eloquent eyes.
 
Have you ever watched the nature shows where they show baby alligators "talking" to their mother as they hatch? Kind of a throaty chirping sound? wup....wup....wup

That's our Toby...the baby alligator. :rolleyes2:
 
Aztec gives a deep sigh when he lays down to go to sleep. He also sighs when he is getting petted. But other than that he mostly just barks.

Laika has a language entirely of her own however. Never have I head such odd noises from a dog.
 
Bentley also "huffs" when he wants something/is impatient. We call it "harrumphing"! He also stomps his back legs at us impatiently when he is hungry or wants to go out.

It's hilarious. He also does the clicking of his teeth. Anything to get our attention!
 
Meggie definitely talks. She has this guttoral sound she makes when she wants my attention. It's hilarious. When I used to take her to work with me in Florida my co-workers were astonished. I don't know if it's a sheltie trait, but no other dog of mine has ever done it. My grand-doggers don't do it though and they are shelties.

I love it when she talks to me.
 
Ellie yodels! He makes the weirdest sound when she sees "danger" (i.e., squirrel, low flying birds, airplanes, leaves falling, etc.). It's this high pitched repeated stacado noise. She also can do this in a much lower register as well. She makes UH UH UH noises when chasing her beach ball (which she is doing right now) and also makes a rumbling sound when being kissed or petted. She also does a completely different sound when she is frustated--it's kinda like a whine, but it is not a one-pitched whine. It's got a lot going on, lol!

Huffs and clicks here too with Bacca! The huff is accompanied by a nose push to my thigh.

The click is usually brought on my over-excitement (lots of jumping happening).

Indy just pants....and pants.....and pants.....

I'm hungry: Pant, pant, pant
I want outside: Pant, pant, pant
I want to play: Pant, pant, pant
Bacca's bugging me: Pant, pant, pant
I'm sleepy: Pant, pant, pant

And yes, sometimes he pants because he's actually just thirsty! :rolleyes2::wink2:
 
Sounds like a lot of shelties make these grunting huffing sounds, so it must a sheltie thing:smile2:. I just love the sounds they make so cute.
 
Boy, Deska has his own vocabulary. He hffs, he pants, he howls, he growls, he ra ra ras, ruff ruff ruffs, and even rararuffs, he moans and groans, he even chatters! The only other dog I know who talks as much as him is Tully's boyfriend, a Rough Collie. Maybe its a Scottish dog thing? When the group of dogs are together its always the Shelties and the Collies that are chattering away.

Tully pants heaps (her version of a laugh) and rara's sometimes too, but the funniest sound is her 'buzz saw' sound. She never has gotten the hang of growling! Tully's kennel gives talking names to their dogs - like chatterbox, chit chat, stopya nagging, talk it up - and they are talkative little dogs from that kennel
