As it was pointed out our present dogs are not wolfs as they have existed and have eaten from the human's table for lots of centuries. And it is not correct thinking that humans ate all that much of the meat until recently and only in developed countries. If you look into history most of the staple diet for humans were various grains and veggies with occasional meat and dairy included on holidays and Sundays... dogs lived with humans and ate whatever leftovers humans gave to them and supplemented their food with occasional game meat...
now since dog's life is rolling out much faster than human's it is likely that genetic makeup in dog's changes faster as well so those diet changes reflected in dog's genetic make up faster than human's...
I believe dogs are carnivores based on their digestive tract structure and their teeth structure. I also believe dogs have developed amazing ability to tolerate wide variety of food and for many many years have not had either meat only, high protein, grain free or any other fad diet presently touted. My best thinking regarding humans and animals- everything good in moderation, including protein...being overweight leads to more problem than any diet could... in humans or animals...
I try to live holistically myself and so is my dog...prevention is the key to good health...

SheltieGuy, I feel you are blaming yourself for loss of your furry one, you feel it is your fault that your doggie developed early failure due to something you did or did not do... it is a part of grief process ... that is how soul heals...
most times there is no fault of anyone's... sometimes people borne with genetic weakness of certain organs and once warranty runs out you are out of luck... same with any animals...

On the subject of homeopathic med- here is a truly funny video. Sadly, it is hard to hear, but making the effort is worth it.

hmm, maybe I do not have sense of humor...
or maybe it is too close to home... I did study quite seriously homeopatic medicine and work in ER and treat people with modern western remedies...
on the other hand ER could be hilarious place...

I guess I don't share the same sense of humour either. I don't know of any homeopath, naturopath or any other 'alternative medicine' practictioner that claims to treat emergency cases such as car accidents or head traumas, strokes etc. In my opinion that is where medicine rules. If I get my arm cut off, I want the best surgeon out there to re-attach it. But, if I am sick, or have some other ailement that is not life threatening within days, I prefer going the 'natural' route. Just my opinion.

    Well,fair enough.
But then again, I'm not sure that literally a guy ever walked into a bar with a frog on his head and an alligator under his arm and said to the bartender...

Humor does sometimes exaggerate to the point of absurdity, which is often what makes it funny. :smile2: - Dr. Mac

    But, point taken.
I do realize that by calling it Homeopathic ER they are, at least subconsciously, lumping legitimate alternative medicine - acupuncture, Chinese herbs, chiropractic, which they do not ridicule in the skit- with silly garbage like crystals, horoscopes and palm readers. Thus somewhat slandering the term 'homeopathic', and that is a legitimate complaint.
However the skit was clearly aimed at quite cleverly skewering the true nonsense some would pass off as legitimate advice. - Dr. Mac

if some one could prove to me that a magic crystal can cure any problems a dog may have i would give them all my money for it .. until then i want a medical vet . :biggrin2:

there was a point in my life when I was taking all kinds of supplements.. ginseng....coconut oil ..fish oil.... all kinds of extracts....body cleanses .. i didnt feel any healthier or have more energy ,, all i had was an empty wallet.
