Well.... yer getting into a bit of 'middle ground' there.

I don't want to get into a traditional/alternative debate here, just want to make a 'point of personal preference' to avoid being labeled as TOO closed minded.:uhoh:
Ann had mentioned that her dog was put on milk thistle for liver support Silymarin, or milk thistle is now routine in the arsenal for treating liver disease, though it used to be 'alternative.' The same can be said for tri-omegas, chondroitin - glucosamine and several other current commonly used drugs. It's not that traditional medicine dismisses promising treatments because they are alternative, our approach is just 'show me the science.'

Now, the 'magic crystal' stuff- yes, that is of course pure nonsense - Dr. Mac

    Ditto to this.

The term "homeopathic" has taken on a definition that includes the legitmate medecines (I don't even want to use the term "alternative" here, because that actually diminishes them by calling them alternative), along with the weird stuff.

I would be much happier if there was a way for medical science to start incorporating the legitmate "alternative" medecines into their vocabulary and their treatments.

My vet also prescribed Milk Thistle for Bacca to deal with his liver. The alternative was more invasive tests and procedures when we still did not know the root cause of his elevated ALT levels. This is a pragmatic approach and one that I wish more vets would employ.

At the same time, I caution against relying on homeo or holistic anything as the way to good health. This is the same for people as it is for dogs. Sometimes and more often that not, science has to take precedence.

    Just my tuppence worth.

It would be nice if vet schools did something similiar to human medicine. There is a big movement now for students to go to a school and study Osteopathic Medicine (DO) versus just medical medicine (MD).

I have two cousins who are DO's...Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine. They are medically equivalent as an MD..but they also study a patient-centered, holistic, hands-on approach to diagnosing and treating illness and injury. Osteopathic physicians can choose any specialty, prescribe drugs, perform surgeries, and practice medicine anywhere in the United States. Osteopathic physicians bring the additional benefits of osteopathic manipulative techniques to diagnose and treat patients. This would be a dream for the veterinary community. Unless of coarse this exists and I do not know of any.

You said this so much better than I.

I do think we are starting to see a trend in medecine overall which looks "at less obstrusive" approaches to medecine.

I don't want to use the "alternative" because it implies that is different or outside the norm. I don't know what other term to use, but I'd sure like to see more non-instrusive methods for us and our babies.

Phebe loves meat, but she was certain that she needed the raw potato that she just bagged counter-surfing.
