Dremel Stylus 1100

Seconding this! The Dremel just sands off thin layers at a time, so you can see exactly where you are... when the exposed part of the nail starts to look a little "fleshy", you know you're done.

And yeah, the clippers scare me, too!

That's the reason I started using the Dremel, Sadie only has one clear nail and I was afraid I'd cut her nails too short.

Im very chicken when it comes to cutting nails. I either bring Bailey to the vet or pay petsmart $9 to get them cut and dremeled.

Bailey hasnt had her nails cut in over a month. There just isnt anything to cut. I guess walking outside and my brick yard wears them down. Is that normal?

I don't know!! Pierre is really the only one with black nails here. My Shelties even have some pink on their paws. I thought all dog paws were all black?! Abbie also has some pink on the corners of her nose, though... sooo...

I want a dremel, but the price tag is keeping me away. Some of our doggie money got shifted into a new car battery last night. Yay. AND I missed Flyball due to it, but at least it didn't happen overnight to mess with me before work.

I do mine every week. However I have noticed that if they are spending more time on hard surfaces (cement, road..etc) Their back ones dont need to be trimmed as much.

I clip only occasionally, and that's when I've fallen behind on their nails and need to make bigger cuts. Dremmeling takes longer for sure, but I've never hit a quick because it is so gradual a process.

The 1100 is great because of its ergonomics. You can hold it multiple ways so that you can really get the right angle.

The best thing about a dremmel over the clippers is:

1) they don't pinch (though you do have to acclimatize the pups to the noise and the feeling)

2) if you've got black nails, it is highly unlikely you'll hit the quick because its is a gradual reduction.

The $100 pays for itself in less than a year. Generally I like to do nails every 2 weeks, at worst 3 weeks. If I was paying $9 that would be $234 per year, and even if only monthly, that's still $108.

And I had a Pedicure but gave it up quickly. I found it too cumbersome to use and despite the hair guard, fur still got caught. Now I give the feed a quick hair trim, dremmel, trim again and do a final dremmel, and a final trim. Perfect paws!

With my forever pup, Timber, I was really bad about getting his nails done. He would not let me do it, which meant the groomer had to do it, which meant, no more than every 6-8 weeks. As a result, his nails grew so long that they could NEVER be cut back short enough. I'm sure it hurt him walking on hard surfaces. Never again!
