Ears--gluing vs. taping

Hey folks, I just want to say gluing is pretty easy-never did it before but read the posts, and also followed what Sheltie Talk suggests. I couldn't find the fabric glue locally, but online I found out about false eye lash glue working, and on amazon, another sheltie mom, used it for her sheltie pup. It is readily available locally, and not expensive...it dries fast,not too messy. So I am hoping for gorgeous results. We have a left ear trying to fly on Kaleigh and so I want to stop it. She is chewing like crazy, so I think we are headed into teething, and that is when all the posts warn that ears get wonky, ha. The type I got was waterproof, we shall see. The ears being tipped are so adorable, I can't NOT have the "look", ha.
 
I've used eyelash glue too and it works well. I've found it doesn't stick as long as Jiffy Sew or Tear Mender sometimes but it's certainly a good alternative. And a bit easier to get out too!

Whether to use glue or tape comes down to personal preference, and what's easiest for you and your dog. I prefer glue to tape. I've never cut glue out...I remove it with Zoeze. A bit on a cotton pad held to the ear softens it so you can gently comb it out. I find the glue much easier to work with than tape, and for me, it holds longer. Here's the tutorial I used to learn how to do it. It's the best demonstration I've seen. You just have to be careful to glue *hair*, not skin. You can get the Zoeze from www.wicketsbymel.com.

Thanks for sharing the tutorial! My only complaint about all the tutorials I've seen is that they are always older dogs/collies! I'm like...I'd like to see you make it look that easy on a little tiny 8 week old puppy!

I was planning on taping but Enzo's ears are so small right now that I think I will have to glue! Not looking forward to that.

Puppies can be tough until they figure it out! I strongly suggest two people for the first few times you do a puppy...one to hold, and one to do the deed. Good luck, Ashley!

Having glued the ears on said puppy, he does great with 1 holding and 1 glueing. No struggle at all. 1 person=not happening.
 
I had to ask a friend to come over to help me glue Missy's ears for the first time. My friend didn't have a problem with it because then she got to see my puppy and play with her :).

I had a different method of doing Missy's ears, and it involved tape and glue. It probably would have worked if Missy's ear leather wasn't so thin. I got moleskin and cut it out in the shape that most illustrations show. I put the Japanese tape between the moleskin and her ear, which really kept it in place. Then I folded the ear and glued moleskin to moleskin. I tried just glue originally, but Missy was bothered by it and kept diving into the carpet head first and pulling it out.. then she would have a bald spot on the top of her head where the hair got pulled out. The other method worked until Missy started playing in the water at the dog park. Then I lost the roll of tape (it's still MIA) and just gave up. Even when I let her ears rest for a day, they always twisted kinda funny so I think they just weren't heavy enough to tip properly. Oh well, I think she looks cute with her perky little prick ears. :biggrin2:
 
glue holding and performing well

hey folks, just an update on our battle to be adorable, ha. Kaleigh's ears held for quite sometime, but with it heating up, she seems to be itchy and in scratch mode, and that notorious left wonky ear came undone :-(, but with a few more attempts...glue-scratch off in a day, repeat, on the 3rd day it is holding fast again, and seems to be staying-phew...when unglued it seems to be "training" well, but by the evening, you could see it was ready for lift off. She is too cute not to have the whole tipped look, so I am determined to keep at it. She is 5 mths now, and headed into chew everything in sight mode. My hope is that she will come out of that phase with nice ears, but only time will tell. I used false eyelash glue, sets fast, holds, is inexpensive, readily available and comes out using either olive oil (I warmed it a bit) or skin so soft from avon-though Kaleigh doesn't like the smell of that much, she sneezes. She is going from puppy fuzz to adult fur now, and is producing lots of ear hair, so I think the surplus gives us lotsa opportunity to keep at it. She endures this procedure but let's me know she isn't pleased. I do it in the evening as one poster wrote, when she is groggy. For us the tape wouldn't work, because she wouldn't allow that much fussing with her ears. My other shelties never reacted like this one does, so she must have super sensitive skin or something...
 
Looking for ear glue today, one of Zoey's has come out and her breeder said I may find it at tractor supply or ace hardware- so going to make phone calls. I did have a friend that has glue and is coming over to fix her on Wed. but I think we need our own.
My breeder said to keep her's glued till after her first heat cycle.
 
Was looking over ear glueing videos and never realized how many breeds get their ears glued. Saw one on a german shepard puppy.
