EatBetter Drinkbetter Bowls

If he starts barfing up his food after eating, then yes, he needs to slow down.

Also I think I recall that Smudge is on Orijen, yes? If so, make sure that he' getting lots of water intake every day. Somewhere I read, and I could never find the website again, that pups on high protein diets need lots of water.

I've also read that wetting down the kibble with hot water will satisfy both the need for water as well as slowing them down.

Though, none of these techniques have worked for Indy. He's just a food hog. He clears his bowl in about 45 seconds or less. But no impact except that he then goes after Bacca's food....bad boy!

He doesn't throw up after he eats. He has been acting like he was going to throw up after I gave him some Dannon Natural Yogurt, so I've stopped giving him yogurt all together. :uhoh:

Smudge drinks plenty of water. I'm glad the water fasting only lasted one day (the day of his surgery). Eating and drinking is something I've ever really had to worry about with him. Even the first day we brought him home he ate with no problem at all.

I wouldn't worry then. However, if he starts to regurgitate his food, or doesn't get enough water, or his poops get off, then, you should consider slowing him down. Otherwise, I would let it go. I think its more our desire for the pups to have better table manners.....

hmmm interesting. Bailey usually doesn't eat her food fast. She did once and threw up a little. However, does drink her water very fast. A few times she has gagged from drinking so fast. I'm definitely considering that bowl.

Is there a bowl out there for the dog that is SLOW @ eating?

My dog takes forever to eat (1\2-1 hour or so!) Is there a bowl out there for that???

Somewhere I read a tip for slowing down a fast eater....just put a couple of large rocks in the dish so that they have to eat around them :) It's never been a problem in our house (although I swear Clancy just inhales his meal!) but for some reason that's always stuck in my mind.:lol:

My Pierre ate really slow. I just had to make it more attractive and put it down for limited quantities of time. I mixed in a little hot water, let it sit for a few minutes and then give 15 minutes for the food. I found that he nibbled the first day, but by the second morning, he was eating at a reasonable pace.

I have a similar bowel that I bought at Petsmart to slow down Sadie's eating. It cost under 10 dollars and did the same thing.

Not sure if I want my dog eating out of "bowel"s ... :P I looked at their site and didn't find anything. Maybe it is a local thing? Or out of stock?

I forgot to mention, another way of slowing down eating is to add water to kibble. This will also give some relief if your dog is constipated.

I tried that with Indy....I think it just sped him up further because he didn't have to chew! I think he just stuck his snout in the bowl and took a great big breath in....and food was gone!

btw - I think I've temporarily solved the Indy fast/Bacca slow issue. Bacca still insists that he'll come to his dish when he's ready. And he still insists that it's only in my office, next to my chair. This was causing some real nastiness from Indy whenever Bacca finally decided it was time to eat and approached his bowl. A few days ago, I thought I was going to have a real dog fight on my hands.

Then the lightening bolt hit. I keep aside 4 or 5 kibble. When Bacca went for his bowl, I told Indy to sit and gave him a treat. A couple of days later, no more snarling. Indy now sits on the other side of my chair without me asking, gets a few kibble, and Bacca eats undisturbed.

I actually don't mind the eating in my office thing. I just jump on the computer and scan Sheltie Forums! :wink2:
