Eating poop...

Speaking of adding stuff to food. Has anyone ever heard of adding canned tuna to a meal to help with skin and coat? A friend of mine adds it to her goldens food.

Years ago a vet suggested bacon grease. Since then I've given my dogs a half-teaspoon every day, and it really does help with the coat. I believe tuna would have a similar effect, as would nut oils.

You have to be careful with nut oils, because so many nuts are toxic to dogs, such as walnuts, pecans, pistachio and macadamia nuts. Almonds aren't as bad but will give a dog an upset stomach. It's best to avoid nuts to be safe.

Just a word of warning about bacon grease. Some dogs can handle it with no issues, but for a dog who might be prone to pancreatitis (and pancreatitis is an issue for a percentage of shelties) bacon grease can be deadly.

Yes; well, a dog that is prone to pancreatitis has a problem. :wink2:

Bailey is a poop eater :-o

My solution is as soon as he poops, I make sure I call him or bring him inside & scoop right away. If I were to leave him outside in the backyard unattended, he would likely eat his poop before I got to it!

Positive side of this, you never have to worry about cleaning or stepping on poop in the backyard, it is scooped as soon as he goes.

Earlier on I had noticed that if he ever went outside & someone let him out & didn't watch him like a hawk, he didn't seem to be eating it anymore, he simply picks it up & plays with it ....

On a few occasions he picked some up from outside & deposited it on the couch:eek2:

The last month he is getting better & hopefully will outgrow this habit :uhoh:

In the meantime I am a super speedy scooper

My sheltie would eat poop and now she does not. Here are some things I have done:

1. Giving her privacy to poop and if she ignores the poop I would reward her with a treat ( she loves bananas!). If she started to show interest in her poop i would give a firm " NO", remove the poop and ignore her for a few minutes.

2. Then she started to poop while I was no paying attention and eat it. In this case by the look of the poop I knew when she did eat or not. If she ignored the poop I would treat her and give her lots of kisses. If she ate it just a lil bit I would pick up the poop in front of my dog, brush her teeth harshly saying nothing and then ignore her for some 10 minutes.

Note: there is no point to reprimand and say " NO" to a dog if you did not see the unwanted behavior. They do not understand.

3. Later we developed kinda of a playfight regarding the poop picking. I would chase her with the poop in my hands and she would run away and playfully entice me to catch her and I would dance and pretend to hunt her. Because of this play, now she warns me that there is a poop to catch and invites me to play. I guess she doesnt find funny eating the poop and hiding it anymore.:smile2:
