Emma and her teeth

The problem with scaling as opposed to scaling and polishing is that there are grooves and pits left on the teeth. The gums then have an anchor to start moving down the tooth (hyperplasia) and can actually grow over the crown. You really don't want to deal with this as even with surgery, it has a nasty habit of coming right back down.
 
That's why I haven't gone to scaling, even though a previous vet recommended it and I have the scalers. This is something I would leave to a professional. If I can get the teeth to the point I don't have to look at yearly dentals (recommended for Emma), that is what I want.

I was in the local PetValu yesterday. The clerk and I were talking about the dental gel. She told me the local greyhound rescue uses Tropiclean and swears by it.
