My old Sheltie is blind now,but he has gunge in his eyes every morning that i have to wipe away,i use boiled water,is there anything else that is better that you use

Is it green or black/dark brown? If it's black it's compleatly normal. All my dogs get it almost every day (I call them eye boogers:rolleyes2:). If it's green then it may still be normal or your dog could have an infection, such as a cold. Just clean it with a baby wipe if you think it may be an infection. I would do it one to three times a day, depending on the severity. If your worried you can ask your vet. Hope this helped!

Thank you Tabitha,it's a greenish / opal colour.I don't really want to take him to the vets unless i have to ,as he gets so stressed, and he's already had strokes and his heart stopped twice.

The color does make it sound like it could be an infection or there may be something in there causing irritation.

You could also use a warm compress/washcloth on his eyes to help soothe it and keep it clean.

I'm afraid that you will have to take him in to have the cornea checked. If it is a scratch it will be really painful for him.
You could ask the vet for some non steroid eye ointment to start with and see if that clears it up.

I would think a warm compress would be soothing for wiping, I do know visine makes cotton padded moist eye wipes but not sure if visine is actually safe on dogs.
