I realized i had not been on sheltie forums since september 11th!!! i thought i'd head back here now since i just finished my second year in university and now i'm not over loaded with work anymore!

So some updates, Riley turned 1 on february 27th he's a big boy now, hes just as crazy as ever though. We are now going on many walks since the snow is done and mommy has finished all her school work for a while. My friends all make fun of me that i'm part of this forum about our shelties :biggrin2: but i dont care i love my dog and they know i'm crazy about him. Riley has now taken on an annoying habit of barking... all...the...time. The only time he doesnt bark ironically is on his walks..even when people come up and he doesnt know them, but at home the demon comes out and even when i come home he constantly is nipping at my heals trying to herd me and barking wildly, i've tried everything even putting pennies in a can and shaking them when he barks but he only seems to try and bark louder so i can hear him over the pennies.Any suggestions?

Riley loves car rides now especially to the groomers but to the vet.... he shakes the entire way, i feel bad he's so smart and automatically knows where were heading before i even get him in the car so i always try and trick him and say we're going to get his hair done but he never believes it :(

I hope all you are well in the sheltie world and your fur babies are doing great and excited for summertime!

Welcome back. Sounds like you are very busy now with Riley. It is tough to get them to stop barking once they start.

Since you were last one, my Sheltie family has doubled. I added a tri boy, nephew to Emma, named Liam. He was given to me by the breeder to get him into a home. He was 10-1/2 months when I got him, and of the two, he is the cuddler, although he does think he is a cat. He is my barker, and it is hard to get him to stop at times, especially at 6:30 in the mornings, when I have them outside.

Looking forward to new pix of your boy.

Glad that you and Riley are doing well! We'd love to see a picture of him all grown up!

Barking can be tough...I think the solution sometimes depends on why he's barking. Is he nervous? Insecure? Aggressive? Or just talking?

I've tried a lot of things with Bentley (pennies in a can, throwing treats on the ground, etc...) and not much works. I've started to ask him for a sit and I pet him or hold him while he's quiet. But, the problem is that he knows I'm coming when he's barking so he barks and runs away from me sometimes. If I can catch up to him, he will sit down and be quiet...but only if I can catch him!

Emmasmom, i'm pretty sure he's just excited, its everytime i come home so his whole body wags as well as his tail when he's barking so he's excited to see me, not sure what to do because i always get excited to see him too and i'm sure thats fueling his barking.

I will try and get photos up, my photobucket account is down for the moment so hopefully it will work soon, is there any there any other way to upload pics?

Welcome back! Riley is still young. Mine are now 16 months and 13 months and I am going through a lot of the same as you. I am hoping they will mellow with age.

Liam is the same way. He starts barking when he hears my car on the street and just goes crazy when I come in the door. Both Emma and Liam try to get to me to get all the attention. It can get pretty noisy at times when I come in, but they usually settle down quickly.

Hello Cait! I'm new to the forum since your last visit. Welcome back, can't wait to see pics of Riley. I have an almost 11mo old sable, Brandy. She's crazy w/ the herding/biting and barking right now too, lol!

it's funny you should mention barking. I started a thread a week or so ago regarding that very same issue. GLAD to hear I'm not the only one with this problem!!!!:biggrin2:
