First night...not a success

Shelties, as a general rule, don't do well with corrective training techniques, such as the leash pop. Many of them are surprisingly soft when it comes to correction because they hate knowing we aren't happy with what they are doing.

The fact they are even using corrective techniques rather than positive reinforcement techniques is a little concerning. If they are willing to work with you to use that style instead it may end up working out. Insist on using positive techniques with your Sheltie because they really do respond better when they know what they are doing right.

As for the disaster that the first night of class was, it could very well be the newness of the class and/or environment. Hopefully you'll see improvement this next class.

I totally agree with Silaria on this. The fastest way to shut down learning in a soft dog is through corrective rather than positive training. And most Shelties are soft dogs, even the "bratty ones". Knowing their person is upset with them is devastating.
