First trip to the pup salon

Wow - a tartan bandanna. I would love to have that for Emma and Liam. Mom's family is Irish/Scots. It would make a neat gift for them for Christmas.

I totally think Sca..is a harley dog..just waiting for his bandana to be put on.
We are a Honda a house for now :wink2: Though I am still waiting for the lotto so I can get some Italian metal  And no bandanas here, we also don't do 'product' :rolleyes2: Bachelor sheepfold so we are happy when it is clean (well except the toys being scattered everywhere) :o

gee...party pooper!

Ok, so I'm going to be the real party pooper here!

No question, Sca looks clean and trim - and the bandanna is great.

But....I'm going out on a limb here to say that the groomer OVER-trimmed him! The picture taken full on front says it all. His ruff was trimmed up to the top of his legs....similarly on his sides...they trimmed his guard hair up to belly level.

He's a handsome boy, for sure (before and after!) but I would not go with this trim going forward.

I don't let my groomer trim anything more than poop chutes, around the paws and a little around the ears. I'll let her even out the growth on his legs, belly and ruff, but THAT's it.

I've been waiting so long for their coats to finally start coming in. The short coats make them look like border collies, so I just don't let my groomer go there anymore.

He's still a gorgeous boy and so obviously your boy! So in tune with each other. I hope I didn't deflate things too much!

if you read Sheeps' first post, he wasn't happy with too short trim either. but neatened up edges do look nice, even if they are too short

Uumm! I read his first post and most the rest. That's why I decided to jump in. Most of the rest just said how "cute" he looked. Because this was posted under the Grooming thread, I thought I would step in with an honest opinion.

If I was out of line, I apologize.:confused2:

Sca looks very nice and huggable! (If he'll hold still long enough to let you!)

Every single groomer that we have used has a tendency to do this (some more than others). I know that they want to even things up, but they just get a little snip happy, I think, no matter what I tell them.

I usually get our dogs professionally groomed once a year, and it evens them out a bit (even if too much), and then it grows out the rest of the year.

Nope I mostly agree. She did clean up his foreleg feathers and at first it looks like they just got wacked. Though it is just trimmed and I think they will come back in nicely with the trim helping. She could have left his belly fringe alone in my opinion though he did have an oddity that got a lot of negative comments. He had a bit of fringe right near his front leg that was black unlike everything else that low. She wacked that and that was good. The big thing he REALLY needed was his ears which look excellent and his house slippers as she called them. His feet underneath look great and were pretty bad, he didn't really have grinch toe on top IMO but under is nice and I think he really likes that.

Oh but bandanas are lame

I doubt he will get more than 2 a year. Oh and he will let me grab him and lay back with him on my chest. The tail goes 90MPH and sometimes he just lets me pet him, other times it is attack the ear time :eek2:

Well, for the brave of heart...the best way to avoid Groomer ScissorHands is to take it on yourself.

I'm lucky in that neither of pups are big fur blowers, so I can normally reserve grooming to every 2 weeks. I cycle between ears and toes.

There are great books and videos out there to guide you. With Shelties, I believe, less is more.

The groomers on the other hand, tend to hack away because most people want it that way....because they don't groom themselves regularly.

I do basic grooming myself, but don't bathe the dogs. No place in my house to do so. When I bring the dogs in for baths (about 3 times per year), I tell the groomer: poop chute, nails, stray hairs only on ears, feet, feathers. Just even it out. No more.
