Flea Allergies

My sheltie gets red, scabby spots all over his belly and even on his legs and sometimes back. They're very itchy, and we've used hot spot spray, medicated shampoo, etc. Went to the vet about a year ago and antibiotics cleared the problem up but then they came back. I suspect it's a flea allergy because as far as I can remember, he doesn't get the spots in the winter. For those of you whose shelties have flea allergies, how have they been treated?

Got rid of the fleas.

River reacts badly to fleas, he is the only dog in my house to get Advantage II flea pesticide. His reaction to fleas are worse than any reaction to the flea gook. This year I have seen no reaction, so something is working.

Sorry, I should have prefaced by saying that Miles does get his monthly flea treatments but he still somehow gets afflicted. I have never heard of the Advantage II flea pesticide... Maybe I will give that a try.

Flea treatments are only as good as evolution is slow. Since everyone uses them even when they don't need to, we have evolved resistant fleas. Frontline is useless in many parts of the country now. So if that is what you are using, it might explain things.

Advantage II doesn't deal in ticks, fleas only.

i know this is an odler post, but here is what my vet said about Miley. She said most flea meds work by the flea biting the dog then dying. If your dog is allergic flea meds are beside the point. The bite still happens, thus the allergic reaction. I feel for you. I had an awful time with Miley and fleas bites. She had to have steroids.

I'm not familiar with Advantage II but maybe it's not available here. However, Advantix is supposed to repel most fleas and ticks so that might help. You could also ask the vet for Vanectyl P which is mostly antihistamine with a little bit of steriod for when he does have a reaction.
