Fleas

Frontline Plus here too. It looks like it's going to work better in our new house than it did at the old one. Guess the change in location has made a difference. We just moved 30 miles away.

One of my boys is allergic to Comfortis. He breaks out in hives and has to get doses of Benedryl!

I also use Frontline. My angel Pavi had one tick in his life (on the way home from the breeders when we first got him) and never fleas, and I always used Frontline with him. Olive is now on the same regimen, and so far, so good.

Would you say this goes for across the country Dr. Mac?

I guess I'll be putting Advantage on Miko (my k/d dog), at least for the summer, and I have been using Advantix for Koji. Frontline/Plus no longer works on fleas anywhere in the area anymore...even the vets quit stocking it.

Where are you located? I'd like to read further into fleas buiing up a tolerance similar to antibiotics and bacteria-but Cornell so far says they have yet to find a flea it doesn't exterminate.

I'm near the coast in Orange County, CA If you want more specifics as to where I am, PM me. I can tell you exactly where they weren't affected. I know along this stretch of area, many people have had issues with Frontline Plus. Many of us use that one for ticks, just in case, because we do agility in some areas with woods, brush, etc. I think it's pretty rampant when the vets stops carrying it and so did many local stores (all because customers/clients animals were getting fleas and Frontline Plus just wasn't working). As soon as I put on Advantix, my dogs fleas went away. Ditto with others.

I can't tell if they're immune where I live now and where I lived last year, since I've been on Advantix. I just know what I've heard. And yes, I"ve heard many times that fleas can't/won't build up a tolerance.....so either Frontline has been making non-working flea protection, or the fleas built up a tolerance.

Yikes! Either way that's not comforting to hear! I haven't noticed a difference in ingredients yet with Frontline, but Merial does have a 100% guarantee and will refund your money if it doesn't work-so pass that along to anybody that has had to switch. It's expensive! Even with Frontline here, I still pulled ticks off my boys regularly last year, and Little Bear contracted Anaplasma. They advertise like the ticks will die and fall off-that's often not the case.

I recently found out that it's actually crawling through the fur that gets the drug on the tick and kills it. If the tick attaches too quickly, chances are it will go on living and feeding, and sharing disease.

I heard there's a new medication (CERTIFECT) out there that is called "crack for ticks" because it makes them wig out and crawl through the fur in a frenzy without attaching, causing them to start dying from exposure to the medication within 6 hours, and killed 100% of ticks within 18 hours-compared to Frontline Plus's 48. In the studies done, Certifect kept killing fleas for 3 full months-but ticks only for 1 month. Has anyone tried this yet?

For what its worth, my somewhat overblown :uhoh: flea lecture, with personal opinions, (in other words, personal opinions ), about the various products available was posted here...

ticks are discussed on the next page.
Merck has yet another new one out, haven't been detailed on it yet (getting a free lunch next week .) So that messy lecture will just get messier. -Dr. Mac

That was absolutely awesome!!! I have to admit, I knew about oh, 90% of that. Do I get an A then?

I started Miko out on Sentinel just in case for fleas, but it was mainly for heartworms. Advantage had just come out on the market and no one really knew anything about it.

I put Koji on Frontline Plus because we do agility, and sometimes its in wooded areas, parks with lots of brush, etc. You just never know what'll join in on his agility fun.

Miko was on Frontline Plus too. Just in case. But when Koji came home with fleas, from around my new place (this is when I found out the darn fleas were immune to Frontline - heard about it, didn't believe it until it happened to me), my vet gave me a sample pack of Capstar to get rid of them first, then deal with the "infestation". Thankfully, combining that with Advantix did away with the fleas.

Just curious, is there any reason I shouldn't give Miko, my kidney failure dog, a Capstar? I'd really rather use something as simple as that for days that I must take him with me to agility (since it's typically 2 days)....versus putting Advantage on him. Which is more toxic?

I love Capstar. It's amazing.

Well, you certainly get a better grade than I would have gotten...:wink2:

LOL. That's only because I did some major research when the Frontline stopped working. Had to figure out what I needed. At the time, the vets were pushing something new and I know I didn't want it.
