Food aggression

NILIF in my house - they sit for cookies, meals. They have to be quiet before the door is opened. I am not extreme but I want well behaved dogs (for the most part).

2/3 of your dogs feel the need to keep an eye on their cookie at all times just to make sure it doesn't try to run away...

I didn't realize that I was using NILIF, since I had never heard that acronym before!

But Yes, my dogs sit for their food or treats (and I say their name before rewarding them - works amazingly well as they won't steal a treat from another, as they wait for their name to be spoken). I have dropped treats on the floor and they ignore it, waiting for me to hand them a treat when I speak their name.

But when the food bowls hit the floor . . it is a different story . . . each tries to eat their food as quickly as possible so they can try to steal someone else's food . . .sigh . . .

When we watch our friend's sheltie, Pogo, they eat their breakfast and supper in different rooms. Neither are food agressive, but I did not want to start any possible trouble.

I always stay with the boys when they're having supper, and luckily neither one ever had to worry about food. However if there is something of real high value I give one to each on their respective bed or mat.
If Zoe has a problem, I wouldn't try and make her have to worry and increase her frustration. So if you can you could just feed her in a safe spot and Zak in his.
I also always use their names for when I training treats, so they know who the treat is for so they don't have to try and snap to get it, lol.

However, it is SUPER important at this stage to reward Zoe heavily allll the time for when she does NOT snap at Zak when he is drinking or near the water bowl, you must get a treat into her face before she explodes at him, lol
We Humans are always so slow to reward the quiet times, we forget to reward what we expect them to do and only react (wayyy to late in canine terms) when they're not doing something right.

Impulse control is of course very important!! so sitting before having dinner and all that is a good thing, but I agree with some of the others, take it slow. And also agree with Mignarda sometimes dogs deserve stuff, because I feel I already control SO much in their lives, when to eat, what to eat, when to relieve themselves, when to work, when to play, when to be quiet, when to sleep and so on... so I do not feel the need to go NILF on them hahaha

Zoey is doing great, we feed them at opposite ends of the kitchen and she is not feed by the water bowl. She eats I put her on the porch till Zak is done and pick up the bowls and take them out side. A few times every day or so I pick up her bowl while she is eating. No problems.

She is a great puppy, we did feet yesterday and she did not even flinch with the dremel.
