Food

Bailey is on welness puppy kibble and canned.

We just switched my two other dogs from science diet to wellness weight management. What a difference! They definitely have more energy. Their coats are now shiny and smooth. And my chihuahua has lost weight. However, that could also be from running around with the puppy. ;)

I am by no means recommending Iams to you. I just wanted to let you know that every dog is different.

Very true! Alot of posters here are feeding Wellness with great success, but a number of others have had problems with it (loose stools).

I think you have to look at your philosophy (holistic, grain-free, high-protein, low-fat, etc.) and to some extent, your pocketbook!

And trial and error. Over time, your pups will change too, and a food that worked well before may no longer be the right thing. You have to be prepared to change.

Right now the combo of Horizon Legacy mixed with 1 tbsp of Merricks Thanksgiving Day Dinner has turned Bacca back into a chow hound! He's back to asking for his meals, instead of me coaxing him to eat.

I see Nutro(I do not feed Nutro) has recalled some puppy food sold at Petsmart and Petco because of melted plastic in the bag.

This is the first I've seen of this post. So I would have responded sooner because I feel Nutro was possibly a contributing factor in the early demise of my prior Sheltie. Unfortunately I would buy her food and dump it into a plastic container and not keep the bag. So it was impossible to know lot numbers, etc.

In November 2007 my prior Sheltie had went to an emergency clinic because of a bleeding anal gland. I think they were so intent on making money off my visit that they basically over-prescribed her medication. She ended up back there the next day because she had a seizure. They tried to write it off as vestibular disease. She was there for over an hour and they still had not done an IV to dilute the meds from her body. But they wanted to keep her overnight and then do an IV. It should have been started immediately. I think they thought I was stupid. I was furious and took her back home and basically stayed up with her all night squirting fluids in her mouth to help rinse the medication from her body.

So the first of Jan 2008 Maxey was throwing up her dog food on a regular basis. Her coat was also looking dull and lackluster. I didn't know if this was being caused by the medicine fiasco. But since she wasn't able to keep down her dog food(which was a fairly new bag) I switched her immediately to a different brand. She had been eating the Nutro Natural Choice with the picture of a Sheltie on the bag her entire life. What was amazing was the first day she quit throwing up. She would actually eat all her food. After a week she even started looking better. By the end of the month her coat was silkier and her eyes looked brighter. Actually her coat was looking better than it had in a long time.

This was a dog who never really had any issues other than she was always highly susceptible to medicines. She then developed an UTI. By the end of February her UTI was not going away with antibiotics and it was finally determined that she had bladder cancer. Was there something in the newest bag that contributed to her problems? Or possibly was there always an issue with this food since she would throw it up sometimes through out the years? The last bag probably should have been sent for testing. There were some serious issues posted on the internet at the time. But again, I didn't have the actual bag.

I guess that's why with the dog food fiasco and then loosing my Maxey, I wonder if maybe I am partly to blame for feeding her that particular brand of dog food. There is a Sheltie in our neighborhood who survived the dog food poisoning, but she does have health issues because of the food. With the new pup I was intent on trying to determine who was manufacturing the food. If she didn't like it, I would assume maybe there was a valid reason and just try another brand.

And I'm sorry this is such a long winded post. Possibly all this was just coincidence. But I do know that the last bag of dog food had problems. Even Hubby noticed how quickly her coat changed after I switched her food. And this is a man who didn't notice the new couch in the living room for better than a month!

I don't think you should beat yourself up over this! How could you know?

You have pups on food for a long time and things are fine, then all of a sudden they are not fine. My first assumption would not be the food, unless I myself had changed anything.

The beauty of the internet is the ability to stay current on "all the news" but how much news can you possible take in? Should I be checking daily dog food posts to make sure the food I feed them is still safe? That would be unreasonable. You did initial due diligence when you chose this food, and I recall that Nutro was considered highly acceptable.

And as far as the recent recall of melted plastic in the bag....well, its obviously not a good thing and it would depend upon how much was actually in each bag, but heck....have you checked what YOUR dog has consumed of household items lately? I'm sure the "stuffing in my couch" is not high on the list of acceptable food for dogs!
