Freaking out here...

You poor thing, I would be freaking out too! I have nothing to offer but good wishes and prayers that the vet can see her and treat her quickly. Please let us know how she does!

just wondering do you have bot flies in the area? I know someone who had a wound like the one you are describing on their rabbit, and it was a bot fly larva :eek2:

Wow, I have never heard of Bot flies, but just looked it up on internet and saw a removal of one. The spot does look like that, but not sure if it is or not. I have no idea if we have bot flies around here??

I have added it to my list to ask the vet, bot fly, dog, cat, rabbit, possum, bird, raccoon, cyst??? Why do these things always happen over a weekend? I have been very anxious for tomorrow morning to get here!! And while I am at it, Noelle acts like her ear is bothering her; so I am going to see if he will see them both!

Thank y'all for all the prayers and suggestions; I will report back in after the vet visit.

I was thinking the same thing this happened to my neighbors toy poodle after a trip to N.C. beach. The first couple vets she saw weren't familiar with bot flies but the third who was Southern new exactly what it was. She got pretty sick since it took awhile to diagnose. Please keep us up to date.

Emma's appointment was late this afternoon and we had to wait for a while as he was slammed today and short staffed. When we got back there and he started feeling around he was amazed at how big they were and asked if I minded if he shaved the areas. Of course NOT...anything to get to the problem!

OMG!!!!! As you will be able to see from the pictures (warning, they are graphic and not for the squeamish). My vet had NO idea what it could be; he squeezed them for 45 minutes and it was never ending. He did not think they were cysts; he said possibly a spider bite (brown lacrosse? spelling) but wasn't even sure it was that because Emma was not at all tender and rarely flinched as he worked on the areas. He said it did not look like a bite?? But not sure, said it could have been a hard blow to the side and a bruise that completely filled up??? (But she has not been in any accidents or taken a blow)

He said a lot of the tissue around it was dead and if not better by Wednesday then he would have to put her under and remove the necrotic tissue and stitch the areas. I already have an appointment set for Thursday morning for the procedure. He said the areas needed to remain open to drain and I had to express them each day; where she lays in the how (several areas) already look like a massacre took place; thank goodness for not having carpet!

we BOTH were lost as to what it is!! She is not acting sick or hurting. I am just sick and worried over this. Oh and I did have Noelle's ears checked; very small itchy dry area in one ear, but completely clear; but he gave me meds for that too. Emma got a shot and Cipro to take.

He might have meant the brown recluse spider, and while they usually only bite if they get caught in hair or clothing the bite can advance to the point of necrosis. It is easy to find information on the spider and it's bites on the web. My dad was bitten a couple of years ago and required daily IV antibiotics for a few days, and then it took a while for it to completely heal. I hope she heals up quickly so that she can be back to her old self.

Yes, the Vet said that (I just didn't know how to spell it as I was typing LOL)...he said could have been, but still wasn't certain because there were 2 bites not super close together. This is why we are going back on Thursday; if it hasn't started to heal the tissue will continue to die. The one reason he wasn't certain it was a spider bite was because Emma is not acting sick in any way??

Just curious is he familiar with what a bot fly is? What you are describing sounds so much like what I meantioned my neighbors dog had. When it bites it leaves a hole where the eggs are left inside,it oozes puss, and eventually the eggs hatch the larva. It was about 3 weeks before the 3rd vet diagnosed it and when he did the larva had hatched by than and skin was deteriorating around the area and the pup had a severe infection in her lungs also. She was a 5lb toy poodle and had 5 bites. Larva were squeezed out of everyone of them. I hear it was really gross and took quite a bit of draining to clean everything out.

What ever did this to her sure looks awful. It must have been tough seeing her go through this. I will keep her and you in my prayers. Please keep us up to date.

I asked him about Bot Fly and he seemed to know about them....he even flushed it out and saw no objects or things in the holes. I am just now going to worry about it until Thursday and hope he goes ahead and opens up the area to clean it out completely and get the dead tissue off. He said the holes were so big that he didn't need to lance it anymore than it is today and wanted to give 2-3 days on antibiotics. SO much came out of the holes, all serum and puss and he just kept flushing it. I will again ask him about bot flies on Thursday unless it looks worse to me tomorrow! He will be sick of me before this heals!

My vet said today he knew I was a great animal lover and would starve to provide for my pets! LOL I would too!
