From a spitz to a herding breed??

It is true there is somewhat difficult to understand the american, but this is such a great forum that I must learn fast all the words

Can you tell me in short how did you worked from the start with the herding instinct. I mean did you redirected her or...?

Oh I forgot to ask are shelties fussy eaters? Lexi is terrible

You said that shelties are very sensible, does this mean also for bad behaviour and the owner says a serious NO? Will they stop immediately or try again?

Yes, I am also overjoyed I found this forum. I have received a lot of useful knowledge about Shelties here.

My personal experience with Minnie:
herding instinct:
Yes - from when I got her, I redirected / derived her with a "little soft No" in the same second I could see she got the idea, so she took focus on me and so praise and a small treat every time.

fussy eaters - Minnie is absolutely not, she eat everything - without tasting it. (But she gets a really good dry food)

When I went on our first walk, it was everything from cigarette butts to paper, but after the shock, I used the same method as in the herding instinct.

Now she never takes anything off the ground any more.
One day we went for a walk there was a bone - she looked up at me, all by herself, I had not seen the bone. I am just so proud of her, she is so lovable.

sensible:
Yes, it is in all situations, if you treat them with dignity and realize their loving mind, and deal with them kindly and firmly, so one can not wish for anything better.

I quickly realized that a hard word, is not a good idea, and will definitely not be necessary.

I'm with my dog all the time I'm home, and she's with me all the places it is possible.
So they learn quite naturally the daily routine including. good behavior.

I have spent lots of time with socialization -and myself have shown good behavior towards her

Which dry dog food do you feed her?

Lexi was the same he picked up absolutely every disgusting thing on our walks, but every time there and now he secretly eats deer poop . Last time he picked up a peace of bread and I said no and he spited out, I was so happy he immediately got a piece of cheese for a treat

Well for me it is good that they are so sensible, because Lexi doesn't care If you don't seriously mean it (he obeys me the most, because others think how cute he is and are too soft for him, he doesn't take them seriously). It is very noticeable with recall, when I call him he comes back as fast as he can, when my mam calls him he is very slow and it takes some time. She cals him in a way that nobody would take her seriously. Well I guess all the dogs would do the same.

He was totally calm with all the people, running screaming children and strange animals. He only growled at the leopard (actually it was lunch time and the big cat was looking at him and thought he was the meal for that day).

Lexi - I really like your little stories about Lexi-the dog, between the lines I can feel your love for him

Unfortunately we may not have the dogs into the Zoo / animal parks here in Denmark. Such a great cat you've got to growl of, if you are a real dog.

So cute when they come rushing to us when we call.

Minnie know, she always can trust me, when I say something it's because I consider it, I always make lot out of always being honest to my dogs, I play honest playing and never tease. In return I demand that they do what I tell them to do.

I use grain-free puppy food - Essential ore Orijon when she go for Adult maybe I will try Taste of The wild too.

Your Lexi is one smart boy...he could read that cat's mind like a true Sheltie. Got to love these wonderful little dogs, they never cease to charm us with their intelligence and their loving personalities.

Yes they really do Trini! I never had dogs before Lexi but I know one thing I will never be without one(or two) again. So hopefully I will have a spitz and sheltie one day soon.

Hanne well I can not hide the love I have for him. I got him when I was having some problems and was feeling horrible all the time and he was the only thing that made me feel better. He has some therapeutic effect on me. Because of him people stop and want to talk to you (usually people just look at him and they start smiling immediately). Shelties are beautiful too so It must be the same.

It's a shame that in your country dogs are not allowed to visit such places. It can be very interesting

Lexi - Yes, a dog can give us so much that we can not pay it back, they never fail us.

Denmark is not a special dog friendly country, there are many places they can not come, and I am really sad because I love to take my dogs everywhere.

But in return, we are a dog-loving people, and very, very few do not treat their animals well, but since we are a very small country, so it will be detected and reported.

Personally I do not want to have two dogs, I've tried it and I had it so difficult only to give each dog 50% of my attention, I always had a bad conscience

I haven't actually though at this problem that I would feel guilty not giving both dogs the same level of affection... Hmm maybe should I worry too I have been worrying about other things like If I will be able teach the puppy all the things Lexi knows, sometimes, I am wondering how did I manage to teach him all this things. I have seen somewhere a thread about this problem..
