Sorry, I meant to ask if you have used any of Merrick's food that wasn't grain-free (my fat fingers don't always hit the right tiny keyboard keys )

From what I can see, chicken and chicken meal are the first two ingredients for all the major chicken flavored premium dog food brands. Fromm Gold (I have never used the old formula) doesn't seem to be different than other brands such as Nutro in terms of using chicken meal (I assume this is the chicken by-product being discussed). Did the old formula not use chicken meal at all?

Actually, chicken meal (or any named meat meal) is a good thing. It's chicken or other "by-products" that you want to avoid in foods. Those are the leftover parts of the animal such as beaks, feet etc. I've read that meat meal, such as chicken, is as good as or better than plain meat because it's more condensed.

Thank you for the clarification. I also read that chicken meal isn’t bad and has more protein than chicken, pound by pound. Actually I don’t see Fromm Gold Puppy dry food contains chicken byproduct in its first three ingredients based on the information they published on their website.

    INGREDIENTS
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Chicken Broth, Oat Groats, Pearled Barley, Menhaden Fish Meal, Brown Rice, Chicken Fat, Dried Tomato Pomace, Dried Egg Product, Potatoes, Chicken Liver, Whole Oats, Salmon Oil, Whole Barley, Cheese, Flaxseed, Brewers Dried Yeast, Duck, Lamb, Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Celery, Monocalcium Phosphate, Alfalfa Meal, Monosodium Phosphate, Salt, Potassium Chloride, DL-Methionine, Chicory Root Extract, Taurine, Calcium Sulfate, Choline Chloride, Chicken Cartilage, Vitamins, Minerals, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Sorbic Acid (Preservative), L-Tryptophan, Sodium Selenite, Probiotics.

I fed Fromm for years to my puppies, adults and seniors. It's a wonderful food. I only changed because I have some dogs with special dietary needs for more limited ingredients.
