Fromm's Dog Food

My boys and the cat are on Fromms and just thriving. I also rotate through the proteins - changing every 3 months or so, Their coats, energy level and "yard deposits" are amazing! :smile2:

Thanks to everyone, I fed our previous dogs Precise without any issues. Good coat, stools, no GI issues. i have been reading about Fromm's and thought I might try this for our new puppy! one respondent mentioned about family owned and total control....a plus for me and made in the USA!

Well, I have that puppy, finally! I started him on Fromms Puppy Gold and he is doing well. The breeder had him on raw and i slowly transitioned to Fromms. It was funny, initially he did nto know what to do with the dried food. I moistened it with chicken broth to soften and he devoured it. I am happy, so far, with Fromms. He is active, good stools, teeth looking good, coat....He is now five months, 16 pounds and about 14 at the withers (not sure, cannot get an accurate measurement). I have been giving him 1-7/8 cups per day (morning, afternoon and early evening). Now it is recommended he receive 1-1/2 cups per day. That does seem like a lot. Thoughts? Do you think that is too much. He gets at least three 15 minute walks per day. Thanks.

Good gosh, my 20', 50 lb sheltie only gets 1 cup a day! My 30 lb, 18" sheltie gets the same 1 cup a day... ok, ok, they get treats and bones too... :) Keep an eye on his waist and energy levels, some are blessed with great metabolism! If you can see the waist indent and tuck up, the ribs can be felt, then you are fine!

Hi Dream2012 . . . Fromm is a really good food. Are you using the Puppy Heartland Grainfree Gold? Or The Regular Puppy Gold? Whichever line you go with (or perhaps you switch between them which allows for exposure to chicken/duck and beef/pork), I have a couple suggestions.

As to amount . . . Cubby ate first as a little tyke 1/3 c x 3 a day. Then we switched to 1/2 c x 2 a day probably around 5 months. Then we settled in to 2/3 c x 2 a day as he aged and finished the growing. He's a pretty large sheltie at 32 pounds and 17.5". However, different dogs have different metabolisms. You want to feel the ribs and you should FEEL the ribs under a little bit of padding but not too much.

Whichever line you are going with (or both), if I may, let me recommend a course for the dog. Stick with Puppy formula until somewhere between 9 months and a year. Then change to Large Breed Puppy until about 18 months. Then change to Large Breed Adult. Don't worry, the Large Breed does not have big pieces or anything. They are better numbers than small breed or regular. These are nearly the same recipes but it diminishes the fat from 18% to 14% to 12% in a step-wise fashion. This will hopefully assist in long-term pancreas/gallbladder health. If we know the breed has a tendency, we need to factor that into our maintenance and do the best we know how to easy the burden on that organ. The 4 Star Naturals are 14-18% fat. I can tell you that my dogs are all on 10% fat and even maintaining the same calories, they are leaning down. Lean meals are good things.

Anyway, hope it helps both on portion selection and recipe choice with time.

Thanks, everyone! Now i am wondering when to transition from the Fromm's Puppy Gold to adult food and which one. I have a 33# bag that should be finished in a few weeks and am thinking I should probably stay with the puppy god until he is one year??? I know puppies have different food and nutrition requirements than the adults. He has done beautifully on the Fromms Puppy Gold and his coat, stools, energy level, etc. are excellent. We had a setback recently with loose stools, but this wasn't the food. He absolutely loves the stuff and devours it quickly so i started using a mini muffin tin to slow him down. The recommended amount for his weight, which is now 22# (yikes) at 7-1/2 months) is 1-7/8 cup per day. Thoughts?

What I would do if I were you, knowing their products as I do, is do your puppy Gold til 6 months. I see you are already there so I would switch when the bag runs out. Then from 6 months (or now) to 1 year go to the Adult Gold. Then I would go from a year on to the LARGE BREED Adult Gold. This stays with the basic recipe if it is working for you but stair-steps the fat levels down from 18% in the puppy to 16% and then 12% which is a nice adult level and should help avoid pancreatitis and gallbladder issues. Don't worry, large breed pieces are NOT big or anything. You can do the same process over in the Heartland Gold series which is beef/pork if the duck/chicken stops working for you. My large pup ate the Heartland Gold series at 1/2 c 3x a day and then at 6 months went to 3/4 c twice a day. As an adult this 32 pound 17.5" boy was eating 2/3 c twice a day if that helps.

I just read that Fromm's has 48% carbohydrate. I've switched to Natura but now there's something wrong with that too! I am about to throw in the towel... Allprovide is having an open house, I think I will go see that, fresh human grade, grain free ingredients.

Thanks, Cubby. My first Sheltie developed pancreatitis when he was four years old. We did not feed table scraps, fatty foods, etc. we stuck with a quality food. Despite the quality food, he developed pancreatitis. So you are suggesting the adult breed puppy food because of the lower fat?

What are your thoughts on the chicken a la vegetables, the Fromm four-star recipe dog food? We had samples of this and he loved it so I bought a large bag. 2Good Dogs, I agree. Finding a good food and so many variables is a challenge. One is easily overwhelmed as you enter the pet stores. My vet did suggest we switch Jackson to adult food a few weeks ago, I finished the fromm puppy gold and slowly added other four star foods, which he loved. the large bag of chicken a la vegetables Has a lower protein content.

Also, the are recommended servicing for his size and age seems like a lot. I believe it is 1-7/8. I think I am going to use 1-1/2 cups per day.
