About 20 years ago, they didn't recommend HeartGuard heart worm medicine for the collie breeds. They had sensitvity to it. To what degree, I don't know, but it was suggested to use Interceptor instead.

I know any heartworm pill that has ivermectin is not good for shelties. I'm not sure about flea/tick external medicine. I have heard over the counter hartz medicine has caused adverse reactions for dogs and my vet says not to use it

Maybe it was that, but I've not heard much about HeartGuard lately....perhaps that is why?

We now know that sensitivy is related to MDR1 gene mutation. So ivemectin should not be use in any dogs who are carrier or affected. Also Selamectin, milbemycin, and moxidectin, drugs in other heartworms preventatives have been shown to cause issues in some MDR1 dogs as well. So monitor your dogs whenever you give them medication regardless of what you use.
WSU has found that 70% of collie are either carrier or affected, 15% shelties and 50% aussies and mini aussies. Other herding breeds are also on the list.
We don't usually talk about Aussies but they are at a higher risk for this issue then our shelties.

Bailey had a bad reaction to panacur, which is a dewormer. It made her insanely hyper. She was up all night screaming and jumping in her crate. Thankfully, she was fine a day later.
