Gabapentin users?

We haven't tried Meloxicam. We did try several different NSAID's and it seems Carorofen works as well as any of the others we have tried and it is more cost effective. She is currently taking the Carprofen with the Gabapentin and Amantadine for pain. Tramadol was stopped for the time being because it didn't really seem to do much. She has tried most every "natural" things with no results ie, CBD, Lipaplex, and White Crane Chinese herbals. Acupuncture and laser therapy also didn't help. She has been on several joint supplements for many years, such as Dasuquin Advanced. She did receive twice weekly Adequan injections for 2 years, but that did not appear to be helping any longer. Missy also has been very noise phobic her whole life, not just to thunder or fireworks, but also many normal sounds like even a bird chirping too close to the window in summer. Lately she has started to experience panic attacks over things we do not hear, but she does. She is taking Xanax PRN for that.
My heart goes out to you! You seem to be doing everything you can to help sweet Missy and have received wonderful recommendations from our best experts here on the forum. As they offer such great feedback to you, I just wanted to add my support. My seniors were also on Gabapentin. One of my Sheltie had pailful bone Spurs on his spine! It did help with pain. Good luck to you and soft pats to dear Missy!

I've used Gabapentin for several of my dogs, my seniors and for others after surgeries. It's my preferred pain med for them now. Checkers took 100 mg three times a day for six weeks after her skin graft, and Barkley, who was sensitive to most meds, took it the last few months of his life for pain as well. As Trini said, once you get through the first few days of adjustment when they may seem drowsy and unbalanced, it's a wonderful alternative to other NASIDS, and quite effective.

I also used the 100 mg capsules prescribed for humans. Very reasonably priced and easy to open if you need to start at less than 100 mg. That was such a pain though that I quickly moved to giving the full 100 mg and they did fine. I hope it helps your girl too!

I just reread your post and you said you found the capsules easy to open? Oh my I am having the worst time opening the capsules to split the 100 mg in half. My vet wanted to try 150 mg 3 times daily and I can't get the capsules to open well, I squeeze it flat sometimes and then if I do get it open the powder is all over the place and no way is it split anywhere even for 50 mg. How did you get yours opened?

It wasn't easy, and when I did, trying to figure out how to measure half the powder was impossible. I twisted them to get them open. But after a few attempts at measuring half I gave up and just used a 100 mg dose. All of mine did fine. I would ask your vet if you can do either 100 or 200 mg. I think splitting them is just too difficult and imprecise.

Well I am sorry you had so much trouble, but I am so happy to hear that it was not just me! Thanks for the reply.

We use Gabapentin for Mindy to help with anxiety. She has 50s. Something called Tiny Tabs. More expensive but available through our vet and, I believe, a compound pharmacy.

This is a great idea. I get my dogs' Urisidiol for gallbladder from Wedgewood. I had no idea they could compound Gabapentin. Well worth investigating! All you need is a prescription for them that your vet calls in.

When my Logan was very ill and needed special medications I used this pharmacy for a cough suppressant prescription: Diamondback Drugs, phone number: 866-646-2223.

They might be able to help for other drugs and dosages as well!
