Genetic eye disorders

Miss Sheltie

I am very worried about my tri-girl, Charlie. Her eyes have been cloudy lately, so she went to the vet today and the vet said her eyes are not producing enough tears. He said it could be something as simple as allergies or maybe her immune system is low. He gave us some drops to do twice a day for the next week to see if that clears it up.
But it could be more serious. We got Charlie from a questionable breeder (we didn't know any better at the time!). I know they did not screen for sheltie-prone genetic eye disorders.
The vet got us an appointment with an opthamologist in Oklahoma City on Nov. 3 to get her screened for these disorders, namely, Sheltie Eye Syndrome and Progressive Retinal Atrophy. We are more concerned about this second one, as blindness is inevitable, and the cloudy eyes is a symptom of that.

Anyway, I am trying not to let myself freak out. There is nothing we can do about it until the appointment on Nov. 3, so I am going to try not to worry about the maybes until we get her checked out.

Just thought I'd share with people who love shelties as much as I do.

You could drive yourself crazy with the "maybes". Hopefully you'll get good news when you see the specialist. I'll add Charlie to my prayers too.

Miss Sheltie and Charlie

Keep the Faith I also will add Charlie to my nightly prayers for all our Shelties with pending Diagnostics. How old is Charlie? May St. Francis watch over her.

This is St Francis' special time -- his feast day was last week. I know he found the world so beautiful. I'll ask him to allow this little Sheltie to see the world through bright, clear eyes.

Charlie is three. Thank you all so much for the kind words. My little shelties are our world. I will keep everyone updated with the situation.

Again, I am very touched by everyone's kindness. :smile2:

My girls and I will send out our thoughts and prayers for you and Charlie as well. I hope all goes well at the appointment. Big wags and licks from the girls to Charlie!
