Getting a new puppy!

So sorry to hear about the tragic loss of Jack... how devastating that must have been! I understand Sadie needing a companion... shelties are such social creatures and enjoy doggie companionship. It is wonderful that she is involved with agility and therapy... a bit of a diversion until you get another sheltie. Best wishes with your new sheltie puppy... it won't be too much longer before you can bring him/her home!

She informed us that the puppies from the first litter are as she said "delicious".

That's funny. But also very odd. Like Cruella DeVille type of odd.

I'm very sorry to hear about Jack, that is always so hard. Love that you are opening your heart to the love of another dog. The new puppy won't replace Jack, but there is always room for more love. And I'm glad that you have this new love to look forward to.

Thanks for the wonderful replies. No, I know that the new puppy can not replace Jack but will offer even more adventures. When we got Jack, I only wanted one dog as a pet. Three weeks later, we ended up with Sadie, his sister and favorite friend. Instead of just a pet, the dogs lead us into therapy work and then agility. We can't imagine what lays in store for us with this new puppy. But whatever it is, we will be ready and willing.:rolleyes2:

Great news, we are going to the breeders to select our new puppy. There are two litters to choose from and from what I hear, all the puppies are beautiful. If we pick one from the first litter, born 11/20, we can bring him home on the 16th of January. Its a 2 hour drive but there is a great donut shop on the way, so i am looking forward to the trips. We have decided to name him Gus. Hopefully, I will have pictures tomorrow.:biggrin2:

How exciting...I am sure you will find "your" pup with 2 litters to chose from. And the donuts en route are like frosting on the cake!

I had a PM that asked if I had any problems training my therapy dogs in agility. Does it make them "Wild". I can't for the life of me figure out how to respond to her message so I thought that I would answer the question here. No, I didn't have any issues with my therapy dogs competing in agility. In fact, I think they go together very well. I believe that all dogs need to release some "steam" and agility is a good way to do it and at the same time build the bond between the handler and the dog. My dogs get to express themselves while doing the agility while in the nursing home or school, they remain calm and quiet. I especially like agility because the dog gets to think and gets exercise at the same time. Rally and Obedience are great too but my dogs got bored. Can any one tell me how to respond to the PM? :confused2:

New members don't have PM usage until they are out of moderation which takes a limited numbers of posts. This ruling went into effect because we had some trouble with spammers contacting members via the PM system. Just keep posting and you will soon have your PM up and running. :smile2:

My wife and I with Sadie (Jack's sister) went today to pick our new puppy. Of course, we picked the puppy that the breeder is considering keeping but our second chose is equally nice. We decided that we would love either. We pick up our new addition on next Saturday, 1/16. I can't post a picture yet... need more posts. I swear that the puppy picked us. He came over to me and allow me to pick him up and was very comfortable while I held him. He and his brother, the other one we are interested in, got back into the pen and started playing, pulling on each other tales. Then a minute later, they fell asleep. My wife and I can't wait for next Saturday.

Can't wait to hear all about the new pup! So exciting :-)

As to the person asking about agility and therapy dog training - my dog does both as well. Having a relationship with a dog and having her understand what I am asking her to do and her doing it - it's exactly the same, regardless of whether I am asking her to sit calmly on someone's bad and be petted or asking her to do a set of weave poles. It does not matter what the skill is that I'm working on with her. Bottom line is that I am asking for a trained behavior and I expect her to deliver :-)

Hope that helps in terms of how to describe how they are not mutually exclusive.
