Getting into the car.

Ozy will jump on beds (including a very high four poster), couches, chairs etc. but will not jump into the car. He will actually lie down and refuses to move. I have to pick him up and put him in. He has no qualms about jumping out. Any ideas? I’ve tried his favorite treats! Nothing works so far.

He doesn't want to go. So make car rides fun. Treat to go in and if he does let him out for another treat without driving anywhere. Also open passenger door and put the first treat on the door sill with another on the floor mat (lower so he can see them and get in easy). Good luck and we love pictures of Ozy

Yup all of our Shelties did not want to ride in the car- I think it is the noise and how fast things go by when moving and it is too hard for them to keep track of everything so ours do not like car rides. One- the small one will jump in and then we buckle her in but the big heavy male I have to pick up-- both will jump out when we are home.. Our Irish setter would walk thru a mile broken glass to go for a ride but our Shelties - none of them wanted to ride.

Have this same issue with two of my three. Can jump on a high bed, but the car? Nope. With Eli, he just doesn't like the car. He always drools a bit, not sure if it's nausea or just anxiety. I'm going to try and train Juno to jump in by Sheep's method - treats on the floor mat first. She's still riding in a crate right now due to her nausea issues in the car. Littlest Meadow will jump right in.
yes, photos of Ozy, please!

Willow would baulk at jumping up to her bed in the car. However, if I make sure there's nothing on the floor of the car and have my wife on the bed side of the car calling her, she will step into the car and from there onto the back seat and then hop into her bed. No fuss, no muss, no bother.

Both Finnie and Piper love their car rides…Blueberry however does not. I guess being car sick all the time might have something to do with it. I couldn’t even convince her to jump in the car if she was off leash, she would run away every time. What I ended up doing is opening both of the front doors and she actually jumped in on her own..
Of course you could put him in the car and then give him treats then let him out and repeat until he starts jumping in on his own and then start with short trips working up to longer ones. Just make sure to give lots of treats .

Never had a sheltie like a car ride or be willing to jump in a car. I think its my only criticism of my dogs! Callahan would watch out the window in the back of the Explorer once you got him in...
Now the boys will jump in the minivan, because its low and flat and open in the back of my Pacifica.

I had that problem with Dickens and now with Mr. Pip, who is game for just about anything except car rides. I tried the thing with the treats, but he wants nothing to do with them. Initially I had a set of little steps that I taught him to climb to get into the car, but once he learned that it meant going for a ride, he gave up on them. So I have to physically pick him up and put him inside!

I have switched from crates to harnesses strapped to the head rests and a towel on the seat which give them wiggle room but they are protected from flying arone- not as much as a crate would but they begrudgingly get in the car when told to but they don't like it-- at least they are comfortable. They usually just lie on the seats and sleep or nap or whatever. Oh what torture we put these poor dogs thru..
