Good bed for a Sheltie?

I've bought a few beds for my Shelties over the years. Their favorite, a $10 large pillow from Ikea... or any pillow for that matter.

I've given up buying dog beds, pillows are cheaper.

I've gone through many a dog bed too. Deska sleeps on a foam mattress I made by cutting up a human foam mattress I'd gotten years before. I try putting a pet futon on top (like a flat pillow for dogs) but often he just chucks it off. He's been sleeping on that foam mattress for 8 years now and I imagine he'll be on it for 8 more. It holds up really well, although I will need to change the cover as it's getting threadbare (it's just covered with the material the original foam mattress was covered). The beauty of using a human sized mattress is I've used the rest of the foam for all sorts of things - a raised seat for Tully in the car, crate liners, bedding for the cats. It's very versatile stuff.

I think the reason Deska likes the mattress out of all the dog beds is because it lets him stretch out fully and he can lay on his side. A lot of dog beds really only allow the dogs to curl up. I remember some years ago a vet behaviourist was giving a talk about dog beds and said the best type are ones that allow the dog to change position and that becomes important as a dog gets older (he was very critical of the trampoline style beds). Also the foam is about 4" so raises him off the cold drafts.

Tully and the cats prefer my bed.

Shelby prefers to use her bed as a pillow. She will lay on it until she gets her good night kiss and treat then she goes on the floor with her head resting on the big dog pillow.

Gavin loves bolsters :) So he can put his head on the elevated pillow!
I bought some cheap fitted sheets at goodwill and cover his beds with them.
Then I can just wash them every week. Makes the beds last longer, too!

I've given up on buying Hanna beds. She's owned several - the current one is an orthopedic memory foam, with a removable cover. She prefers the floor - usually the entry or bathroom because those are tile and really cool. When hubby is away she gets to sleep on my bed but I think she likes the carpet at the foot of the bed just as much.

That's Dickens too. He prefers the floor, and he's not particular about any one area. My son was this way too. When he was two years old he'd climb out of his crib, take his clothes off, and sleep right on the cold floorboards.

Cleo has a dog bed but doesn't really use it either. My cat likes it more than she does. I decided that I would rather not spend the money looking for a dog bed (mainly because at night she has to be on the memory foam bed with the hubby and I). Some nights if the hubby is late she steals his spot. Usually though, she is at the end of the bed all sprawled out.

We have an Orvis bed that we've had for 3+ years. It's in great shape, and all the dogs like. It even survives Enzo's nightly (albeit brief) humping sessions

It's this one, and like the others, we just had to have something that had pillow-like edges for the pups' heads!
