Good-ish update on my Katy!

This was what I suspected honestly. The spleen would be a reason for anemia. I would NEVER even consider surgery on a 14 year old. By the time you discover a problem in the spleen like a tumor or hemangiosarcoma surgery does not do any good. You would put her through that with nothing to be gained. I'm sorry you and Katy are going through this Jason but keep in mind it's our duty and awesome responsibility to not let them suffer. You have done the utmost to help her but I think you must be realistic. I'm not trying to dash your hopes but please keep Katy's true best interests in mind. :hugs

Our hearts are with you and Katy-- it is sooo hard for both of you. You are correct to think about continuing her life it will be torture but the alternative is so sad. So many here have been where you are and we all know there is no easy decision...we all wish you and Katy the best...and that you have done your very best for her.

The doctor is going to call me later this evening with an update on her blood work, but I talked to a vet tech about an hour ago and they said that there hasn't been any real changes since yesterday. She's still in the oxygen tent and is alert, but still not eating.

That makes me pretty pessimistic :'-(

I keep reading statements about older dogs living a good life for 1-2 years after a spleenectomy, but with her being so weak right now I just don't think that it's an option. So yeah, we're bracing ourselves.

Just had a call from the doctor. Hemacrit is at 21% after the blood transfusion, so better than the 10% when she went in but still critical. All of her other blood work looks good, and she said that Katy not eating is to be expected at this point.

I don't expect any further developments until the ultrasound tomorrow. Everything more or less relies on the result of that.
