Today is quite a sad day for our neighborhood, this morning at about 9 am our neighbors, the Gallaghers sheltie was out in her fenced yard when she attacked by 2 coyotes. Her brother a chocolate lab risked his life to try and save hers but it was too late. As much as he fought they continued to attack Biscuit. The coyotes were scared off by our next door neighbor when he ran over to try and see if the dogs were okay and thankfully he had a shovel in hand to get them away. They brought both of their loved ones to the animal hospital where they tried as hard as they could to save Biscuit, unfortunately her body was too damaged and they made the decision to end her suffering. Her brother Dennis has suffered major injuries to his stomach and back legs he had an emergency surgery and they were able to repair his legs and his stomach. Unfortunatley he will not be able to see his sister when he returns home. It broke our hearts to know this happened, our neighborhood is in mourning with the tragedy we have all gotten flowers to put around bisuits grave and also a cross we all signed with our love.
We called animal control about the 2 coyotes, and since then they have caught one, it was positive for rabies so we all are keeping our dogs inside since we know these were rogue enough to jump into fenced yards and one is still on the loose. Dennis was given blood work to make sure he isn't postive for rabies they are hoping to have the results by tonight, so far they say he is showing no raised temperature although the virus can latent for days or months the bloodwork will confirm if he is infected or not, he also has his rabies shot so they say it's unlikely we're all hoping and praying he will be okay.
This sheltie was not my own but i have known her for 12 years, she is the reason i wanted my sheltie, she showed me how caring and loving they can be. Please keep her family in your prayers tonight as they are very torn and are experiencing a great loss. May Biscuit rest in peace.
