Greyson's First Grooming

He's looking very good!

One thing though that you might want to mention to your groomer....keep the razor away from the dog. Razoring a poop chute is fine (but not more than 1-2 inches wide (i.e. following along the line of the tail).

I noticed that they razored his legs. My groomers have done this in the past and I've finally learned to tell them to stop. Thinning shears and scissoring only on the legs.

I finally learnt this lesson when I brought the boys to a Sheltie breeder in April for a grooming. Now, I get it.

I'll still cheat and use a bikini shaver on the feet, but never, ever on their legs or pants.

You're right about the legs, I didn't even notice until you pointed it out (the true sign of a Sheltie novice ). The groomer looked at me like I was nuts when I said I only wanted the feet and the poop chute trimmed. She told me that when I picked him up we could go over it and if I wanted more trimmed then she would do it right then, which of course I didn't. I think they razored his tail a little bit too, I will take a picture and post it on flickr in a second.

A bikini shaver on the feet is such a good idea, I will have to get him one when he needs another trim!

Looking great and probably feeling also! Think how nice you feel after a shower when you have been out sweating. Now use your newly spiffedness to beg for food.

Sca stays all day and likes Kerry the groomer just not the bath girl :biggrin2: plus he has Kerry fooled so she let's him roam a bunch.

He looks terrific and is a very, very handsome boy!

Note: He certainly poses well for the camera. (Great pictures by the way)

It takes a while (for me 3 years) to finally learn what to ask the groomer to do, and what to learn to do myself.

The reality is most groomers are used to shaving. Its easy and fast. It's impossible for them to know how to groom every breed of dog, so they will take the most expedient way and hope that you are happy with the results.

In reality, there is some practicality in cutting back on the feathers and hocks - though it would never pass conformation, and it certainly detracts from the look. I think the most important thing though is never, ever, let them touch the guard hair. It's there for a reason. Trimming the ends ofr "shaping" is fine, but never let a razor or scissors touch anything else.

Both my pups are still suffering from having their butts shaved too much. Groomers that didn't know any better. But well-intentioned. As a result , their undercoat sticks out all over the place....and this is from 8 months ago!

Learning to groom yourself may be one of the most pleasurable experiences ever. I must admit that I tend to procrastinate because I just hate hauling everything out, setting up the dogs and the clean up after, but once I'm groooming, I really do enjoy it. I keep telling the pups..."almost done", but then I just keep going!

I try to learn something new every time I do the gang. I learned how to get the vein in the toenails to shrink back last week -- cut on the bias, the bottom shorter than the top.
