Growing

I have tried that. I actualy had a man that was in hid 80's argue with me, and tell me he knows what shetland sheepdogs are, and you have a mini collie not a sheltie :rolleyes2: whatever, I wasn't going to waste my time arguing with an old guy!

What a stubborn old fart! As if you don't know what kind of dog you own!

All too funny!

I too am wondering when Bacca will stop growing and when his coat will start filling out....he's already quite tall and his fur has completely changed texture. From puppy fluff, to smooth and sleek - not alot of undercoat, so therefore no poof!

Also glad to hear that Bacca will be smart because he too has a lovely white ruff!

Thanks everyone for their help!

I am comforted by knowing that Pogo will be smart because of his full white collar. However, I am noticing some brown tick marks on his collar, does this imply that he may become dummer as he gets older? :confused2::lol:

I think he's about 13 inches now and of course I love him regardless of his size. I'm not wondering so much about how much he'll grow "up" as much as I want him to grow a bit longer. I see him next to standard size Shelties and they look like a horse next to my pup.

BarbV, I know exactly what you're talking about. Of course, I got Pogo when he was older, so he was already sleek and smooth. I, too, am hoping that he fills out when he gets older. That's why he's getting premium food and fish oil/omega 3 supplement... I know, I'm a worry wort...but I love my lil' furkid.

most shelties have a good coat by 3 years old. some are born just dripping with coat then their are others like my skyler that look naked until 3 y/o

Yikes! I have to put up with scraggly pup for another 2 + years! I might just have to bring him back to the breeder for a refund!

I have all of these comments. I had an older guy call my Rachie a border collie and when I corrected him he told me" I know border collies and that is a border collie" ooookkk. I have had people call my shelties "mini Lassies" or toy collies and my tiniest little 11 inch shelties are called hairy chihuahuas. Nothing personal against chihuahuas but I despise that breed. I covered my little ladies ears so they would not be insulted. I stopped educating people after I would explain and they would roll their eyes. I believe those folks live by the motto "ignorance is bliss and I am so happy"

When does a Sheltie stop "growing"?

I took my dog to doggie camp at Petsmart today and there was another lil' Sheltie there! I wound up talking to them for a bit and they said their little girl was 8 months old (and had a very bushy coat) and I said that Pogo was about 5 1/2 months old. I swear they were the same size. I sorta felt bad for my lil' guy because you can tell a difference between a dog from a good breeder and one from a BYB (at least in this case). But I love him regardless! :smile2:

BTW, if I hear one more person call my dog a "mini Collie" I think I'm going to have to hurt them.:dead:

I know the feeling.... I have three, and if I hear it's a mini Lassie one more time I will be right next to ya. lol

Sadie stopped growing between 6-7 months old.

I get the mini collie comment once in a while, most people just aren't sure what she is. I had to stop myself from laughing, on the weekend someone got really excited when they say Sadie and said 'Oh look! What a beautiful border collie!' Don't know where that one came from, Sadie is a sable!

I got that today as well...oh ma'am those are the most beautiful border collies I have seen...Kaleigh-being a tri, I can give some latitude, but Savannah is a "Lassie" clone, only smaller, the blaze, the collar, the sable fur, and a long pointy nose, and, so no way is she sporting a border collie look, ugh. I just smiled and walked on. As long as they make me happy, I could careless anymore that people are clueless about our breed, ha.

I don't ever get warped about the mini collie thing. Is not worth getting angry about. I just tell them its a Shetland Sheepdog, or Sheltie - and some call them mini Collies, but they are actually a different breed entirely. I don't know why so many of your are upset by this.

Though I do find it unfortunate that so many people think that mixed breeds (e.g. golden doodles, shi-poos, etc) are actual breeds and in my store we gently try to educate them. The reality is that there are so many mixes that come into my store Im often at a loss.

Intersting that Shelties have become a hot thing in my city. I've never seen so many. So its becoming easier to educate. Plus I have pictures of my dogs, and my dogs in store as well, to help educate
