Dawn I am so sorry that Gypsy is having such problems and have not used those drugs but I can understand the vets concern. I wish I had an answer for you but all I can offer is support and prayers. Wonder if a raw diet would benefit her but some times that is not good for an immune compromised dog.
I'm sorry to hear she's having trouble again. Thoughts are with you and Gypsy!!! I feel quilty for owning 4 completely healthy dogs.....So very sorry for all both you and Gypsy are having to endure. My thoughts, heart and prayers go out to you. Hugs to both of you, as well.
And Mr. Mally sends his "sheltie kisses"!!! (and a couple of his "woof-woof's" thrown in for good measure!) He wants his girlfriend to get "all better".
You know what Dawn? I really freakin' hate that sometimes life is so unfair! Poor Gypsy girl!
I hope they come up with a solution for you that doesn't cause her more pain, and I am thinking of you guys!

The dermatologist just called with Gypsy's test results and she has resistant staph again. We started her on avelox last week just incase but by the 4th day she was unable to empty her bladder which has happened everytime we have used this. He has always said to stop it when this happens so I stopped it Friday and didn't bother calling him prior. Today he tells me the avelox shouldn't cause this, well it can't be a coincidence that everytime she is on this med a few days she stops urinating or goes 16 hrs or so before going.
He said we are running out of options for her and mentioned 2 meds but they both can cause her harm. The first is Rifamin which can cause liver issues so he told me to take her in to have a Serum Chemistry done tomorrow before we decide on that one. The second is Amikacin injections. We currently use Amikacin in a spray form on her now. This can lead to Kidney damage which is already and issue.
I am taking her to the vet tomorrow and when we get the results my Vet and Dermatologist will discuss the plan they feel is best for her and consult with me at that time.
I really don't know how much more of this I can take with all I have been through with her and Chandler. I was really hoping things would calm down a bit after Chandler passed and I hate putting her through all this constantly.
I really envy the people I see walking up the street and into the park who have a healthy dog that just trots about without a care in the world. They have no idea how fortunate they are. Gypsy's whole life seems to consist of meds, allergy shots, fluids, more meds and just short walks because that is all she can handle without sitting down along the way.
If anyone has any experience with either of the new med options I have mentioned please chime in.
Thanks
